Mike is retired and spends much of his time traveling in his well equiped camping van with his three Border Collies. He is still running marathons. He gets up to Monterey two or three times a year for a visit.
Pardon me if this is old news. I can't recall anyone mentioning this, but it would appear that Mike Urso is playing with two guys called Alex Causey and Rich Leon. They released a CD called Cocobola Club which is available through CD Baby.
It doesn't say it is "our" Mike, but he is the bassist and backing vocalist so one would assume...
He looks to have aged a lot since the Last Train South photo featured above. I see that JP2 (as Rare Earth) is listed as a friend so maybe its already been mentioned here on the Forum and I missed it.
I have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to acoustic folk but the four songs sound pretty good to me.
The Mike Urso who played base and sang harmony on the Cocobola Club Album is the same Mike Urso that played with the Last Train South, Frank Zappa, & Rare Earth.
Thanks for confirming this. I liked the songs on my space and I hope the project is going well. Please send our collective regards and best wishes to Mike next time you see him.
Thanks for posting the pictures of Mike. It has been quite a while since his last visit to Monterey. He may not be running marathons anymore. At least, not the Big Sur. I have his phone number and keep meaning to call the guy.

Ralph,
You're very welcome. I ran into his sister Rena on youtube recently and she put me in touch with Mike via his p.o. box. I sent him the Head Over Heels album, all of the R.E. stuff he played plus the one and only Zappa gig he did in November 1974, taken from the soundboard direct. She said he was very excited...especially because he never even knew there was a recording of his one and only Zappa gig.
Speaking of soundboards...with all of the bands I've traded music for over the years, Rare Earth is one band in which not a single recording from the mixing board has ever seen the light of day. In many cases a soundman for a band usually held onto such tapes and eventually, somehow, they leak out. I wish that *whoever* Rare Earth's sound guy was had that type of stuff and also that it would fall into the fans' our hands.
Hi I'm Teddy Licavoli's wife - Teddy and Mike used to play in a band back in the day. Teddy's son would like to talk to Mike regarding his dad(Teddy) who past away in 2000. Please email me at dlicavoli@yahoo.com.
