Everyday I practice drums by playing along with songs. (like in the old days) and today I decided to play along with Rare Earth songs. Well I just had to stop and say that in my opinion Ray played one of the best solo's in my experience with him, on the song..... The Seed..... I forgot how much I loved that solo... Just sayin......
Ray is really burning up the fretboard on this track. And underneath everything, there's some nice rhythm playing from Ray on acoustic and Mark on piano. I like the production as well.
I have "One World" on the i-Pod. I think I'll give it a listen before I go to bed.
Thanks for the inspiration Peter!
PS,
You can toot your horn a little bit...you did write the song
Mike beat me to it in pointing out it's one of your songs Peter. I think you also wrote another of my later favourites "When I Write"? I'm not going digging through my albms at this time of night to confirm it though.
Yes, Ray's solo is truly great on that song, but you could say that about a lot of his solos. At school everyone was into all these rock bands from Zeppelin to Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Genesis etc etc. Ok, great musicians in their own right, but even back then, Ray was right up there with the best of them and I think that was overlooked because most Motown bands used session musicians (ironically one of them being Ray). No doubt about it, all the members of Rare Earth could compete with anyone on a stage!!
I know I've said this before but one of my favourite guitar solos from Ray was on the song "Do It Right" off the "Midnight Lady" album. Peter was on sabbatical around that time while Frosty kept his seat warm. ;)
I just hope that one day soon we get to witness further evidence of this. It's time to unleash those "LIVE IN CHICAGO" tapes!!!
How can anythin beat RAY on HUM,I COULDNT BELIEVE.?????????
Those feature great lead and rhythm playing by Ray.
One of my absolute fave "Monette Moments" (I like the sound of that) is his solo on the live version of "Get ready" on the In Concert album. Wowie zowie!
I've been listening to the In Concert album lately during my workouts and I had forgotton how amazing that performance of Get Ready is. Ray's guitar is off the charts!!
