Who was playing congas while Eddie was playing Pete's drums? It's not Pete because he's out front and also over banging on his cymbals. Since the congas are stage left, and the camera angle for the latter half of the song is stage right, I can only see a head of hair, somewhat curly in the back. My guess is that Mark wandered over there for a few moments. You can see Mark walking out front at the same time Pete does as he grabs a mic and says "Well Celebrate, Celebrate:. A few seconds you can hear a sustained note on his Hammond organ at the same time the congas are being played. A few seconds later, the congas stop and here comes Mark back over to his rig, If Mark was on the congas for a few moments, who set that sustain on his organ? There's a shot of Pete over near Mark's organ while the congas are going, but Mark is not there. I don't think Peter plays organ. Can someone unravel this mystery? Thank you.
MARK WOULD PLAY CONGAS IF HE GOT THE CHANCE,SO YOUR GUESS IS CORRECT. ALSO.......WE ALL PLAYED SOME KEYBOARD,BUT I'M SURE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GIL THAT GOT ON THE B3.

Hi Ray
Was there anything Mark didn't play? Besides his skills on the keys, I've heard and/or seen footage of him on timables, sax and harmonica. And he had a strong voice too.
There's definitely 2 edit points in the video, both are marked by what video production people call "cutaway shots", in order to nto show loss of continuity or jump cuts. Pete's clapping along and encouraging Eddie while the camnera focuses on Mike & Gil... the organ starts while Gil is still at the mic (4:04). Ya gotta dig Gil's "WOO". A moment later, there's a cut to a shot of stage right and Peter is over near Mark's setup(4:14). Call it morbit curiosity I suppose but such things intrigue me. Too much free time? I suppose. But Rare Earth is one of my favorite bands.
I think before Mark went to play congas, he set up a "block" on keyboard, to play that one note. You can see Mark is coming back, and removing that "block" from keys.

Good notice Mike,love that question.
Rare Earth forever!
peace.
Hi Radenko,
At the moment the chord is held on the organ, you can see Gil, Mike, Eddie, Mark and Ray in the shot. Either a roadie wandered over to Mark's rig or it was Pete because in the next shot, Pete is over by Mark's organ.
Pete, I'm not trying to bust you out on this Just morbid curiosity.
I still get a kick out of Pete almost bumping into the neck of Ray's guitar. Oops!
Most of the time I really didn't really enjoy coming out front. I couldn't help thinking about what might take place behind me with the music. So I was quick to move out there and then get back to my drums. As far as the note on the organ goes, well it's anybody's guess. I couldn't tell you, and that is what I'm talking about. Even though I always thought there was a plan for the front man thing I never knew what might happen with the music. It was all random. I don't do well with random!!! I like to preform songs. Jammin is something I have never really enjoyed. too boring for me. Jammin within the song is fun sometimes and it seem that whenever it happens successfully it's great but then trying to do it again the next night usually falls short. so I would rather stay away from too many loose ends. I like intro's, verses, chorus's, bridges, and endings.. Maybe I'm just too set in my ways. there you have it..

Fair enough
From watching the video, I'd never guess going out front would be not too enjoyable. After thinking about it, going from beind a drm kit to "front and center" might make someone feel like a fish out of water.
As for jamming, the thing I've always noticed with Rare Earth is that each member was/is very good at improvising but somehow everyone would all meet back at a familiar spot to return to the chorus :) Now, in a song like Thoughts...everyone jammed off the top of thier heads...and boy does that song ever work!
Too set in your ways? I wouldn't say so. Like you once sang in a song "different strokes for different folks"
