How I first came to hear "ONE WORLD"

Hi guys, I just wanted to share this. Around 1974 I was at home, on summer vacation from school, bored out of my mind. I was about 14.  I decided to get on my bike and take a trip (about 2 miles) to a local shopping center where there was a McCrorys (remember? They were what we used to call a "five and dime store"). They had a record department, and I was already into many bands from the 70's at that age (kind of young I know, but I was a weird kid!). I got there and looked at the records. The cut-out bin had record albums 3 for $1. I bought Rare Earth "One World", The Doors "Other Voices", and Mountain "Nantucket Sleighride"...all three for a buck! I got home and had a blast listening to that stuff. I had heard of the three bands, but at the time it was still new to me. I know I'll never get that feeling again....but what a nice memory I have of cracking those brand new albums open and listening to that great stuff. "One World" and "Nantucket Sleighride" have both remained two of my very favorite albums because of that day. I can't say the same about "Other Voices"..I just didn't get into it. Thanks for listening to my story...tony

Hey Tony:  all three for a buck?   You owe me $2..  One World should have been at least $3.00. Peter

Good one Pete! Actually, about a year later I found a discount table at Pomeroy's back in those days that had albums 3 for $1....I remember two of the ones I bought from that table were IRON BUTTERFLY "Evolution" and The James Gang "Passin' Thru". Naturally, those albums have been replaced many times over, and they all remain part of my collection today...I am a hopeless record collector at 48 years old...but I love it!

Tony...Other Vocies isn't bad.  The surviving 3 members could've gone into more jazz/fusion stype stuff with less emphasis on singing.

here ya go Pete:

Hey Peter...

My Dad shelled out $ 2.98 for the reel to reel tape when One World came out and he wore out the tape!!....He loved What'd I say the most....I believe he got his monies worth!! My Dad is the reason why I am into the band so much...

These are great stories: I have a flyer for a show that had, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and the Doobie Bros. along with Rare Earth as the headliners for $5 at the door and $4.50 advance. If only I could find it.  I'd show it to you.  Peter

Peter,

Oh wow! That's one heck of a triple bill...and all for $5. smile That sounds as cool as the show you mentioned in your book from summer 1974: War & Rare Earth @ the Hollywood Bowl.

Ahh! I wish someone would invent a time machine.

Tony,

I don't recall seeing any previous posts from you, so if I'm right, welcome to the forum. Great story, reminds me of me. Speaking of weird, back in my youth,  I went to the local music store. Once there the first thing I did was grab the WLS radio Top 40 list. It was always on a small sheet of paper with a small ad on the bottom. On the front the left side listed, in order, the top 40 albums, on the right the top 40 songs. The flip side had the lyrics to the No. 1 song that week. Next I would head over to the cut-out album section and try to find some gold treasures as you had. It was a small place that also sold some entry level instruments. Now, if they didn't have what I was looking for I would ride my bike about 10 miles, uphill both ways, and got to a different shop in the next town over. I knew what I liked and had to have it.

Peter, that's a long time to wait for 2 dollars, but at least you didn't have to go through this. [video=]

Hope the embedded video appears, if not the link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUU9UmT134M

Peace,

Chicago Tommy

Hello Tony.....I loved that story, here we use to have a Towers Dept store and the sale bin was always full. My copy of Mountain's- Nantucket Sleighride and my Lighthouse -Thought of Movin' On , One Fine Morning came from there if my memory  serves me correctly. Did your Sleighride come with a lyrics booklet and band photos? I've still have the booklet and one photo.

As I mentioned in a post some time ago, One World was a big party album for me back in 1983.  I had heard bits and pieces of it back in the day, but i had never owned it.  I dubbed it to cassette and blasted that album in my car for most of the year until i replaced it with a homemade Ecology/Ma cassette!  But One World had quite a run and remains my favorite RE album.  Seeing the guys live with Pete during that period only added to the joy.  It was such a happy energetic time in my life.
