I truly believe that Normans productions(w/RIVERA)r true gems;Least HUM,BIG JOHN,LOSIN u;3 out of 6,not bad;Though MA(the record)was a disaster,much too long,RE fans should just drop it,3 classics out of 6 songs,not too shabby;his stuff w/LACROIX was also great,RIVERA wouldve killed those songs;Anyway...does any1 know if MOTOWN is hidin other NORMAN gems,w/RE?

No I don't think there were any other cuts with Norman except for the songs on "MA"

I think Ma is a fine album. There are some great grooves on that album. The only mis-step is Come With Me, because of the noises.

I agree with Anonymous. I was just listening to the album the other day and really enjoyed it. However I don't agree with some of those supposedly professional critics who claim Ma is Rare Earth's finest piece of work. I think they've been brainwashed.

That was me...anonymous. I forgot to put my name in there.

Ma is a fine album but it's not my favorite among my Rare Earth stax of wax smile

Back to Whitfield for just a moment...what a major figure in the annals of Motown. One of a kind, for sure.

Um...I guess I'm the lone dissenter here in re: the title track of "MA" LP. Being that I, as a kid, *did* groove to those LOOOONG classical symphonies by Beethoven, Lizst et al..*and* being a 'child of free-fom FM Underground Music that is no-less-than-7-minutes-long' (i.e. "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "Hey Jude", "Get Ready", "I'm Going Home" (The Woodstock version) amongst others...I just, for want of a more genteel term, TOTALLY ATE UP that title track! clap.gif

Mark's piano solo is worth the price of admission alone! clap.gifclap.gif

The rest of the LP is a gas, as well...I *did* play **that** closing tarck on Hich School Radio once or twice Back In The Day....the odd aprt is I didn't get called to the carpet by the Superiors about it..confuse

By the way, unless I'm mistaken, the, uh, "vocal effects" on "Come With Me" were provided by Whitfield's 'Creative Assistant', Asari Graham.

And I *did* forget Mark's *equally stellar* piano solo on "Smiling Faces Sometimes"...that one is worth the price of admission, too!smile

By the way, that was the lone track to *not* be pulled off the "MA" album for 45 single release..

The *sad* thing of it all is....that tune didn't get *any* (MUCH-deserved) FM airplay Back In The Day, either....disbeliefnocry

pete your drumming is the greatest and I love the song Ma because it lets everyone get loose, exspecially you and the percussion as well as the keyboards. are you still performing. I would love to see you again I got a chance to see you guys in Roswell a small town in New Mexico at the high school gym it was one of the  greatest concerts and highlight of my getting to go to concerts and just jam keep thumping hope to see you soon , I would love for you to sign my LP's thanks al granville

I used to feel that Ma didn't warrant the whole side of a 12" album but more recently I've enjoyed listening to the CD and there's some very subtle stuff going on. It's nice to have something that contrasts with the faster livelier jams. I used to be critical of the song but "No More". Now where have I heard those words before???

No, I was thinking of something a little closer to home. The two words appear frequently on the thread called 'Lyrics'. Need I say more? I'd better not.

SNAFU...I saw them once and really liked them. Bobby Harrison on lead vocals as I recall. wasn't he a drummer in a previous life?

As far as "weak" is concerned, that dubious honour *MUST* go to "Grand Slam", Rare Earth's Swan Song for Motown..

..but that *shall* be discussed in a *future* thread!
