Well all I remember is that we jammed and jammed and I saw the engineer change the tape and we kept jammin.... Norman Whitfield was in the middle of the studio and he just kept having us jam on... He cut up the tape pretty good so I don't think the part that wasn't used is still in existence. If it was I don't think it would make much sense either. Norman was an editing freak.. Lord knows what happened to the unwanted tape.. Maybe it was really only 41 min or 39 min or 56 min....can't remember but it seemed like more than an hour....

Good point Peter. Many studios and labels often discared what wasn't used...for better or worse. The worse example was ABC/Dunhill Records. They tossed out most of their multitrack tapes in the early 1970's when they bought Dot Records and needed tape storage space. A big mistake.
I, for one, would love to hear the unedited jam if it or as much as possible...if it still exists. Even more than that, I'd love to hear the unedited performance of Thoughts. Ray told me that the jam went on for an hour and it was all improvised. I always enjoy that track and wish it went on longer. It seems like it fades too soon. Maybe someday.
Nothing of that length exists for that length on tape for that song in the vaults. However there are multiple tapes for the song so maybe some are in consectutive parts.

Hi John,
I'll bet the whole thing was captured...one several reels. Studios and remote trucks usually (not always) used 2 tape machines in order to capture stuff and overlap. This is called staggered recording. Even if it wasn't...I'd still love to hear it all, in spite of any edits or jump cuts.
But I'll take the full jam of Thoughts before anything...well, except for Live In Chicago of course.
