Hard to believe I got that one wrong, I was born in 1969. Guess I'm merely optimistic about the band and myself reaching 50. I've heard your only as old as you feel and age is only a number. Guess I need to contact AARP and cancel that gift membership.
As Mowtowners you should know that age ain't nothing but a number. Yeah right. I'll try and remember that when the bones start creaking again this Winter!
Ralph, sounds like you are taking orders, not being familiar with Motts, beyond their juices, and their reputation, I'll have what Peter's having, but with fries please.
Okay, I'm guessing the aforementioned Motts and the juice company are far from being related.
Okay, I'll just settle for some of the best BBQ around, after all, I am licensed to Grill.
Ralph, Pete, and whoever else, at least I was able to get the focus off that age discussion...
I did a little research and the same spelling is a coincidence.
Pete and Ralph would be the experts but from what I just read, Mott's was a local place. And I've read some posts from Detroiters that it was THE place to get burgers way back when.
They were bigger than White Castles. And they, apparently, weren't for everyone. John had indegestion problems and I don't think they agreed with him. We took Jack Rainwater there one night and he vowed to never again go there as they gave him some uncomfortable indegestion. I guess Pete and I were simply into grease burgers. I loved them.
No comparison to Castles's . No the ball of meat (about the size of a golf ball) was squished with a metal flipper into the hot grill and then a small handful of onions was squished on to the meat. Then salt and pepper was applied. The bun was tenderly places upon the meat and cooked and steamed for about 2 min. Then the bun was picked up with the left hand and with the flipper the meat was turned over and the cheese was applied only to receive the bun for another min or so.... then the flipper was inserted under the whole thing and the top bun was held with the left hand and then slid under the flipper and the flipper was removed. The masterpiece was then wrapped in 2 sheets of paper and stuffed into the bag. Sorry I left out the application of the pickle and mustard and ketchup... usually applied just before the unit was wrapped.... 6... for a Buck..... with a big orange....
You're making me hungry. PLEASE don't anyone post that photo of the multistory cheeseburger again or I'll be forced to hotfoot it to the local Burger bar for a junk food fix!!!
Multistorey was what I meant to write, not multistory, though I do enjoy your multi-stories about Pete's appetite in his younger days.
When did you guys eat these burgers? I expect it was after your gigs? Even now, me and the other guys in the band often head off for a grease burger or fries, especially me...the one with no will power! Like I said, don't revive the burger photo or I'm done for.
Was Motts actually spelled Motz? I'm pretty sure the place was sold, at least once, has anyone been there recently? I might be in Detroit on Monday and don't want to miss out on an opportunity to try the aforementioned burgers. No doubt they will be a bit more than 6 for a buck. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
