Rare Earth Concert - Waukegan, IL July 11, 2009
Permalink

Hi All,

Just wanted to know who else plans on coming out to see Rare Earth in Concert in Waukegan, tomorrow night, Saturday, July 11, 2009 in Waukegan, IL? The event is called, Scoopin' Genesee. http://www.scoopingenesee.com/ It is a classic car cruise located in a neighborhood in the city of Waukegan known now as the Genesee district. Not far from Lake Michigan, the event was originally known as "Scoop The Loop," but a few years ago it became "Scoopin' Genesee" do mostly in part to the revitalization of the downtown district situated, near the Genesee Theatre http://www.geneseetheatre.com/ on, you guessed it Genesee Street. The forecast is perfect and I'm sure it will be a good show. If you are going, look for the tall dude near the stage, probably snapping photographs and wearing a Rare Earth shirt, it's probably me, make sure to introduce yourself.

What a show!!! I saw, I heard, I was blown away. The guys put on a show that had the crowd up dancing throughout the night. A good buddy of mine approached me wearing a new, black Rare Earth logo t-shirt, a fellow musician, and a RE fan - he was impressed as well. Now I've seen hundreds of RE shows, but Saturday, on Washington Street was the place to be. I had my first opportunity to see and hear Ray Monette back on Lead Guitar, and that he did. As always I was also very happy to see Gil Bridges, JR, Randy and Mike. I told the band, after the show that they sounded very tight. Waukegan is rumored to be the 9th largest city in America, and I do believe they rocked-out the whole city and all its residents. I'm looking for to the 5th of September, when I'll see the guys return to Buffalo Grove, IL.

Sounds great Tommy. Nice to hear you give Ray a mention and good to know that Gil appears to be ok.

Anything unexpected in the setlist?

Hi UK Dave,

Sorry it took me so long to reply, the set list was as follows:

-Big John
-Hey Big Brother
-Smiling Faces
-Born To Wander (with a "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" tease)
-Papa Was a Rolling Stone
-Tobacco Road
-I Know I'm Losing You
-Get Ready

+Encore

-I Just Want To Celebrate

The Rare Earth t-shirt I previously mentioned was purchased at the venue - the band had merchandise for sale and after the show met with fans and signed autographs. A couple of guys even had the band sign the trunks of their show cars. Cool. I had heard they planned on clearcoating the trunks to help resist sun fade, fade, fade.biggrin

After seeing that show, I am seriously considering road tripping out to Detroit to enjoy the Woodward Dream Cruise (woodwarddreamcruise.com) and see Rare Earth play the event on August 15, 2009.

UK Dave,

Gil was blowing some soul from his heart straight through to his sax. Gil seemed to be doing great.

Craig,

"Papa Was A Rolling Stone" is off of "A Brand New World." I'm guessing you meant no brand new material. My thoughts are, that the set they played was chock full of hits. Hits that the fans are familiar. It must be a difficult course to invent a set-list that will probably end up dropping some classic hits for brand new material. I was listening to "ABNW" while running some driving chores today, and still feel the "new stuff" is in keeping with what the fans familiar with the classics could relate to as being Rare Earth, and moreover is great songwriting, playing, right down to the final mix. The hurdle, if it can be called that, is to introduce the new stuff to the fans expecting the old stuff. Also consider that Ray may be working out his flair on the ABNW recordings to add his signature style too, if that is the case, it will be worth the wait.

The above thoughts are strictly my opinion, nothing more nothing less.

Totally agree with you Tommy. What do you leave out to accommodate the new stuff? Maybe there's room for one or two of the new songs, but the songs in your set list are the ones most people will be expecting to hear. I'm sure they will squeeze in at least one more from BNW once they've rehearsed with Ray. After all, it's going to help sell the new CD.

I was out of town for the waukegan show, unfortunatly, but I will be at the Sept. 5 show in Buffalo Grove.

I feel they can take Papa off the set list since they tease it in Born to Wander anyway.  They really need to take a chance with the new stuff, I mean, what, are people going to walk out if they play one new song? LOL!!

Hi Stuart,

Sorry you weren't able to make it out to Waukegan. I'll be at the Buffalo Grove show fo sho, hope tp meet you there - I'll be by the merchandise area following the show.

"Papa" is a killer tune, but that aside and following your thoughts, my preferences would be either:

"Game Of Love" or "Day Dreamer."

Regards,

Chicago Tommy

I think I see another new forum topic in the making. And please, everyone, don't give me hell for my opinion, instead share yours, pleasantly. -Stuart the opinion thing was not aimed at you.

Hey Chicago Tommy,

Look forward to meeting you at the Buffalo Grove show.  I wouldn't be surprised if your face is familiar when I see you as there seems to be a core group of people I always see at RE and CRA concerts in the Chicago area.  I'm also going to the CRA concert in Aug. in Bensenville.

Yea, it seems to me almost any song from the new album would be good live as the songs seemed to be written with live performances is mind.  My favorite on the album is Dancer, but I would be happy to hear anything new live.  RE seemed to have no problem doing Howz About Some Love and The Biz (later changed to All or Nothing) live back in the early 80's.

Take it easy,

Stuart

Enjoy the show. If you get talking to other Rare Earth regular fans why not tell them about this site. The more the merrier (as long as they use small letters lol).

Rare Earth should really be considering inclusion of at least a couple of the new tracks. There's plenty of contenders. Prove It would be good. I also love Nothings really Changed but maybe unsuitable for the live set? Brand New World is a fine piece of work.

Anyone going to see the band in Farley, IA on August 29th? It's about 10 miles west of Dubuque, just a little ways east of Dyersville...all on highway 20. Not too far from the field of dreams either smile

Hey guys...If you play it, they will come smile

Hey real sorry about the new tunes not being in the show yet. i'm going through a serious health problem that's prevented rehersals from taking place. We just were able to have our first one and got "The Love you save" "Shelter" "Game of Love" ready to do live and plan to be able to play all the new songs live. So have a little patience please.

God Bless
Gil

Thank you for the reply Gil. smile

I sure do hope you're getting better. When some new material is in the set, that'll be the bonus. I'm just glad to be able to see you guys perform. I'm sure all of us fans have our "dream setlist" and I'd love to hear Good Time Sally but I have not one single complaint. And I'm not saying anyone else does here either smile.

But as long as Rare Earth is still out there, the band has my support.

Hey Gil, once you start putting in one or two of the new songs people will ask why you're not playing some of the old hits. It's called a no win situationsmile Anyway, glad you're feeling better!!

Ralph
I just bought a book called "Tamla Motown - the stories behind the UK singles" by Terry Wilson. Are you aware of it? What a brilliant book it is for Motown fans. I bet you and Ray would really enjoy it. There's a write up on every UK single release and some of it makes fascinating reading. There's a brief mention of the Rare Earth label and MoWest, including a listing of their catalogues.

Dave,
There is mention of the book on the Soulful Detroit forum and it is getting good reviews.

Clearly a lot of work has gone into the book. It's more useful for reference rather than reading from cover to cover. I've been quite an education as far as some atists are concerned eg Shorty long and R Dean Taylor, the former drowning in a boating accident and the latter of course ending up on the Rare Earth label. Also interesting is the time where HDH were in dispute with Berry Gordy which left The Supremes and The Four Tops with a lack of music to record.

Ray commented on how I Want You Back by the Jackson 5 was recorded twice, once in Detroit and once in LA. The book refers to the follow up single ABC stating that Dennis Coffey reckons he played on it in Detroit yet Freddie Perren claims it was recorded in LA as he participated. It sounds like there were two recordings exactly as Ray stated. He sure remembers his stuff does Mr Monette!

There's so much more. Lyricist Roger Penzabene, who co-wrote with Whitfield and Strong, committed suicide after his wife left him. He poured out his despair in the lyrics of his last couple of songs, one of which was covered by Rare Earth - I Wish It Would Rain!!!

Anyone into Motown, whether from the Uk or not, you'll enjoy this book!!

Ralph, I'm sure I'll come across your name as I wade through it.

UK Dave,

I always enjoy your posts. I have been mentioning this forum to other Rare Earth fans, so as the saying goes, the more the merrier.

Gil,

Sorry to here you are not feeling 100% yet. Please, try not to overburden yourself. Thank you for reading and responding to all of us here at the forum.

Ralph Terrana,

Sorry to hear you were not able to meet up with Gil. I know, both you and Russ, were really looking forward to getting together with Gil.

It was a real pleasure to have met you and Russ when you blew through the Windy City.

All The Best,

Chicago Tommy
