OMG!!!!! I heard every song what a lost treasure now found!!....does anyone know if this was the 1971/74 line up...I hear Pete,gil,ray and eddie....was mike and mark there too??

I definitely hear Mark in there...his style of playing and backup singing. As for Mike, maybe. Ray, Pete or Gil would know better as to when Mike left. If I recall correctly, Mark was with the band until 1986 or so.

I'll email Gerry (youtube member0 and ask him if he remembers who was playing bass. I can only assuem it was Mike since they were playing Tight & Hot material...at that time it was recent.

Is this genuine or not? It doesn't quite seem right to me. I'm even wondering if the comment from Ray is the man himself.

Who is in that photo that's on all the videos? The guy top left holding the guitar doesn't look much like Ray to me. Is that Bird on bottom right? He doesn't look very convincing.

I'm a regular here but I'm staying anonymous on this one (like most other posters on this thread). Let's just say I'm sceptical.

The music on the video is real. The picture is one of Gils band shots of his group after I was gone. Don't know much about the personnel. Interesting how these things surface.  Peter

Thanks Peter( I mean you were there, so you should know)....I believe the music is from the old line-up('71-74)...The man posting this might not have older pictures of R.E....is probably why the current line up is posted...it is genuine...

OK I doubt no longer.

Several things made me slightly sceptical. One or two of the comments under the videos were open to interpretation for instance. I couldn't work out if Gerry and the other guy were working the desk for 2 weeks or members of a support band. Then there was the comment about Peter singing the echo part rather than using effects on (I Know) I'm Losing You, which I know is true but the phrasing seemed different to how he usually sings it. Ray's email was in his normal capital letter style and no gap after the comma but not his usual font size Then the blip in the sax solo on one of the songs.

I'm delighted to hear it's the real deal and in my heart I didn't think a tribute band was capable of such a performance anyway, even if there are some brilliant tributes around nowadays. Peter's voice, Gil's sax and Ray's guitar are the usual trademark, and Mike can recognise Mark's playing style.

Finally I just want to echo everyone's concern for Jocko D who hasn't posted for a while. I hope he's ok.

To be fair: Pete sang that echo part in the In Concert album too. I always dig hearing that...the repeating of "fading" and Pete singing it quieter each time. smile

It is indeed the real deal. That's definitely no tribute nobody sounds like Rare Earth except...well...RARE EARTH! I know it sounds silly but I can hear Mark's style of playing...very lyrical, if you will. A talented player, for sure. And let's not forget Eddie's congas.

I tried Jocko's phone # but it's an old number and I can't get the new one...it's unlisted. I sent him a letter. Hopefully he's ok.

In 1982 I believe the Rare Earth lineup was Pete, Gil, Ray, Mark, Eddie and Tim McCormick on bass.

Regarding this recording, I'm back in touch with Gerry who has this tape. He's had some private issues and he's going to get a copy sortedout and sent. It'll be added to the project.

Who was the bass player at that time, Pete? Ken Johnston says he left in June 1981. I guess it would be whoever succeeded him.

The Calgary 82 material on Youtube is Brilliant. Many thanks to Gerry for posting it.
 
This is the Rare Earth I know best because it was the Willie Remembers line up I caught in concert more times than any other.
 
I don't have a clue as to why somebody would assume this newly discovered treasure was performed by a cover band.
 
The band was really on the money the night this show was recorded and it sounds as if the band members are having just as much fun as the audience.
 
The last gig I caught with Peter at the helm was during a 1982 club tour and the Calgary 82 show sounds very much like the show I caught.
 
Michael Urso played bass at all the RE shows I caught during the early 1980's.
 
If you listen to Get Ready from this show you can easily hear Peter say "Gonna have a little bass ya-al"-"Michael"-"Michael's going to play his bass" as Mike Urso begins his bass solo..

Thanks Jocko for clearing that up. I haven't listened to all of this youtube posting yet so I hadn't heard that part yet. So Michael came back to the band again in the early 80s after Ken Johnston sat in for him for two years there....

Jimmy, On page two of the forum Stuart from Chicago posted great photos of the Willie Remembers line up performing at Haymakers near Chicago in November 1982 and April 1983.

On page three of the forum Thomas R posted a link to his Youtube posting of photos of RE performing at the Edgewater in Wisconsin in the early 1980's.
Accompanying Thomas R's photos is a remix of live tracks from In Concert.
Mike Urso is not the bass player at the Edgewater gig so Mark M asked if anyone knew the bass player's name
Thomas R seemed to think his name was Tommy but Stuart from Chicago said his name was Tim.

The Calgary 82 show has excellent sound and I'm wondering if there are any additional tracks and perhaps the full version of Get Ready on the master recording.
Radenko-The version of "I'm Losing You" from this show blew me away too.
Mark's organ intro into "I'm Losing You" is smoking and Gil does some awesome sax work on the extended intro into"Get Ready".
It seems as if the band members gave it their all at this show and if anyone has listened to the show in it's entirety I'm sure you'll agree with me.
I'm not very good with computer's but I was able to burn a CD of the show by running a patch cord from my laptop's head phone jack to my home audio CD recorder.
Sound quality is not the best due to low input level but if the CD is played on a decent sound system it sound's pretty darn good.

Ken Johnston, earlier on this forum, confirmed his tenure with the band as:

Bassist from June 1979 to June 1981. See new site at http://home.roadrunner.com/~jcentral/band1.htm

Hey all,

Here's my recollection.  The two pictures that were just reposted on this thread: The top one is Nov. 82 and the bottom is June '83.  I also did post pictures from April of 83 (good ones of Mark in that batch!).

After June of 83, I saw Rare Earth 3 times that fall (of 83) and again in Jan. and then April of 84 (with no Pete, but Tony on drums).  I interviewed them the day after the show in April of 84 in Paletine, IL.  I don't remember if Mike was on bass for the first of the 3 shows in the fall of 83 (and i'm still kicking myself for not taking pics at those 3 shows!!  What was I thinking!!!)   But definatly, the last two shows of fall of 83 and all the way up till the april of 84 show, it was Tim on bass.  In fact in my interview, Gil mentions how he likes to keep all the guys from Detriot and I believe i say something like, "you mean including Tony and Tim."

After that, I didn't see RE until 1990 and the Wayne Barricks line up which is already pretty well documented who the players were.

Hope this helps.

Can't wait to see the guys this Sat. night in Buffalo Grove. So excited to see Ray for the first time in at least 5 years and to see Gil after what he went through.

My favored are comments on You tube Calgary posts  from Jim that has been from the band call Tempest and they open for Rare Earth(i asume that Gerry was in the same bend that night)

JIM: "....SO COOL GERRY! Wasn't that an amazing opportunity!? **** takes me back. What a guitar sound!? They made me feel we were just infants, going on before them. Thanks for this Gerry..."

JIM: "....Gotta love Pete's subtle "hmmm" at the beginning (Tobacco Road)with his disappointment with the feedback. Still has to sort of sing it, he was so damn cool!. What a guitar break in the beginning!.."

Well that was quite anitclimactic now wasn't it?! Haha....oh well, still very cool to hear these old tracks from our 2 weeks of fame Gerry. Thanks man!...

Stuart, Thanks for posting your input on RE's 1980's era bass players and thank you for sharing your awesome photos with us.
Looking back now I wish I had thought of taking a camera along with me to concerts a little earlier on in life.
I purchased my first camera in 1984 when I had tickets to see RE at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC but the show ended was canceled.
In early 1993 I took photos of RE at a club gig in Danbury, Ct and to my surprise some of my photos actually made it onto the Different World CD.
