What is the tone recipe for the guitar sound on "Celebrate?" Amp? effects?

HI GORDON,

THE MAIN PART OF THE SOUND IS COMING FROM A BLACK BEAUTY LES PAUL.
I REALLY CAN'T REMEMBER THE AMP I USED,BUT IT WASN'T THAT IMPORTANT.
THOSE HUMBUCKERS WERE SCREAMING!!

THE ONLY EFFECT WAS LIGHT REVERB FROM THE BOARD,AND THE VOX WAH ON THE SOLOS.

THE THING THAT MADE THE SOLO WORK SOUND SO FAT WAS BECAUSE IT WAS ALL DOUBLED. NO PRO TOOLS IN 1971. YOU HAD TO COPY EVERYTHING AS EXACT AS YOU COULD A SECOND TIME. I THINK THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER DOUBLED ANYTHING.

Ray,
Pro tools couldn't accomplish what you did. Nothing like the real thing, dude.

I was listening to an LP the other day from 1978. The vocals were painful to listen to. The lead singer, who actually has an excellent voice, had had his vocal double tracked or layered with a chorus effect and there was a slight phase dfference. It's almost like the hole in the record is slightly off centre but it ony effects the vocal. I never noticed it back then but now I've noticed it I can't help but hear it everytime I play the record. A bit like when you notice a pattern flaw in someones wallpapering. Once you'vce spotted it you're eye is drawn to it like a magnet.

I just wondered if you'd ever come across anything that you'd done or used in the studio over the years which you now wish you hadn't.

HI DAVE,

JUST ABOUT ANYBODY COULD LOOK BACK AND SAY, I COULD HAVE DONE THAT BETTER!! OR,I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT.....I SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS!! I KNOW I'VE DONE IT MANY TIMES. BUT.......I NEVER WAS A BELIEVER IN OVER WORKING,OR OVER THINKING WHEN IT COMES TO MUSIC. I'VE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT THE BEST,AND MOST LASTING THINGS ARE INSPIRATIONAL,SPUR OF THE MOMENT IDEAS. IF YOU GO OVER,AND OVER ANY SONG OR LICK,IT WILL FINALLY BECOME STERILE,OR DIE.
THERE WAS A STANDING JOKE WITH THE FUNK BROTHERS IN THE STUDIO WHEN WE WERE ON TAKE 29,OR WHAT EVER. SOMEBODY WOULD SAY....UH-OH!!  "RIG'S SETTING IN". MEANING,OF COURSE, RIGGOR MORTIS.

ONE LAST THING.......I WISH THE "FUZZTONE" WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN INVENTED!! BUT.....IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO GET SUSTAIN AT THE TIME.

Why is that Ray? Were those sustain pedals not reliable? Batteries not lasting very long in them?

I'm not sure how the following examples of sustain were done but I like 'em:

"Listen" (Chicago...on their debut LP "Chicago Transit Authority")
"Everydays" (Buffalo Springfield...from their 2nd LP "Buffalo Springfield Again").

I'm no musician but it's amazing to think how far technology has come in the past 40 years.
