I was thumbing through Pete's book this morning and came to the section about the famous 1971 Miami gig. I got to thinking what that whole venue looked like and how exciting of an evening that must've been. I'll bet that Ray, Pete & Gil will never forget it. And I'm sure if John, Mark and Eddie were still with us they'd remember it too.

Here's some pictures I found of the venue. Must've been one HELL of a night!

"There's a chance of soembody getting shocked in the water. We've got a lof of electricity around here". That stage hand who made the announcement wasn't fooling.

1971- Rare Earth played a concert there, which was recorded for their In Concert album.
1985 - Jimmy Buffett performs live at Miami Marine Stadium in August as part of his Sleepless Knights Tour where "insanity rules as tens of thousands rocked in the water. Enjoying the music from their chairs, their boats, or just wading in the bay, they had all come to party with the pirate songster of Key West." A video of the performances was released on VHS and laserdisc under the title Live by the Bay.
1992 - On 18 September, county building authorities ordered the stadium evacuated immediately because it is unsafe....due to Hurricane Andrew.

Wow! This is never what I pictured, in a million years.  No wonder you guys were worried about people getting electrocuted--especially you guys!

So the band was situated on a barge-type stage, out in the water?  That had to have been fun!

You're welcome Richard. I'm glad everyone enjoyed these pictures. Makes me feel good knowing that.

The live album was also recorded in Ithaca, NY @ Cornell University. Being that it was 1971 and it was on a college campus I'm guessing RE played at Bailey Hall:

That'd be more intimate venue...a great place to see Rare Earth.

While listening to the In Concert LP,I thought there had been photos posted of the venue,now that I found them I understand why they wanted everyone out of the water.

I was at that concert.  My mom and my girl friends mother took us. Joints being passed all evening, my mother in a panic.  I was devastated at the performance, incredible sound and energy.  Pete Rivera was a cyclone force all on his own.  On the live recording it's me whistling like a madman on the first side of the album.  And yes the morons in the water on inner tubes,  you just had to have been there. Thanks be to God...
