It is 12:55pm,just listening to Rare Earth- Get Ready, having a cold Dr Pepper with my lunch of cheese dogs and banana cream pie. Tonight we are going to see some live music at a pub in town, should be a good time. Hey Tommy I won't make to A&E I don't have that much junk, I don't think I do, maybe, sort of, kind of,you know, you may be right. Dave Had a buddy stop by a couple of evenings ago he bought two cans of Old Speckled Hen,I haven't had that beer in a while. Catch ya later!
Al, I keep laughing at the Chomping but I can't remember how we started that. It was related to snow but I can't recall why we started the chomp chomp thing. It's my age. Save me the bother of looking back and remind me if you can.
Dave I think it was something to do with you telling a new arrival to the forum that we don't bite, maybe me when it snow's. Last night my wife and I went to the Fish & Brew pub to see 11th Hour. A night of rock n roll, cold Moosehead ale on tap, free popcorn and I even danced a few times, a good time was had by all.
Spent a great Friday evening watching one of my all time fave bands Mott The Hoople, they first formed in 1969 and 40 years on the original line up have got back together. They did a warm up gig in a theatre in South Wales, then they played 5 sell out nights in London at the famous Hammersmith Apollo....
Did I enjoy the show?, well its now Monday morning and I am still smiling, in fact I have not stopped smiling all weekend...Yes is the answer, they were awesome.
Aah, yes, I remember now. LOL. Noticeably colder here tonight in the UK. Currently down to 4 degrees C. Chomping is not far away!
I called in at a pub tonight to see a 3 piece girl band called Syren. The guitarist / singer is from America and the bassist and drummer are English. They worked hard and I enjoyed their set.
I've got a serious liking for prog rock band It Bites at the moment plus their ex Lead Guitarist Francis Dunnery, who I believe now lives in the US.
John Beck is indeed still there. I saw It Bites way back in the 80s when John got up and played a couple of numbers on guitar. He's a more than decent lead guitarist and after original guitarist Francis Dunnery left they carried on for a while as a three piece under the names of Sister Sarah and Navajo Kiss with JB switching to guitar. Currently John Mitchell is the new guitarist / vocalist and he's doing a great job.
Richard
The Stables is owned by Dankworth / Lane isn't it? I'd love to go there for a concert one day.
I wondered about that because I met John Beck when he was with playing keyboards for Alan Parsons Live Project back in 1996 in Chicago with the group Yes...We had back stage passes for the venue and got to meet and greet members of the band and John was a down to earth guy like the rest and the man can drink!! LOL!! I think he is very talented musician....
I was stood right in front of John Beck during the show. Though he was swapping grins with the band, he never looked directly at the audience and his eyes looked like he's weathered a few storms. A couple of days ago I was listening to an archived 30 minute interview with It Bites drummer Bob Dalton (BBC Radio Gloucester website). He said that these days the band don't drink or party.."except John Beck who's still at it every night". That explains the eyes and it seems you've witnessed it first hand. I stayed behind afterwards and the band mingled with the audience. I was hoping to meet them but a friend(?) I hadn't seen for a long time collared me and I couldn't break free from him. What's more, he was boring me to death by speaking unkindly about mutual friends. He really is a nasty piece of work and he could see I was trying to get away so he got further in my face. Yuch! Anyway, John Beck is awesome and I was also really impressed with Lee Pomoroy the new bass guitarist. There wasn't a second in the show when he didn't have a smile on his face. He clearly loves playing those challenging basslines with It Bites. There is life after Francis Dunnery after all!!!
Richard Mott The Hoople! Man that sounded like a great show, I was in high school when I first heard their music, early '70's, never live though. Dave No chomping here, 8c and rain with rain forecast for the remainder of the week.Maybe sun on Friday,if so I'll be out playing golf. End of the season day of goofing off. Listen to some tunes Bad Company, Powder Blues Band, Firefall.
Firefall, ah yes, the band that featured Mark Andes on bass. I'm a big fan of his previous bands Jo Jo Gunne and Spirit.
And the late Michael Clarke on drums (Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros). And Rick Roberts...who replaced Gram Parsons in The Flying Burrito Bros. I have the Best Of Firefall cd. Not a bad cd actually...mellow 70's stuff.
Thanks Mike....I do remember 1 and 2....I got firefall confused with the group Orleans...they had the hit Still the one that ABC used for a Promo back '77 or '78...
Yes Mott were great, when you consider how long its been since these guys have played together, its quite amazing. I know they rehearsed for 5 weeks and did a couple of warm up gigs in a small theatre before they did the 5 shows in London but just remember it would have been 1973 when this line up last played live. I was sitting next to a guy who had flown over from Denmark to London to see 2 of the shows and he said it was worth the trip. A good friend of mine had a ticket for the Saturday night show, loved it so much he went out and got tickets for the next 2 nights as well lol...
Some of the people spotted in the audience over the 5 nights included. Morgan Fisher, Joe Elliot, Mick Jones from The Clash, Dave Gilmour, and the band thanked Jimmy Page for comming, Rick Parfitt was also sighted....No doubt there were loads more musicians in attendence.
I missed out on the Mott re-union but I can imagine it was great. Ian Hunter always impressed me and All The Young Dudes would be worth the ticket price on its own. I love that song, one of Bowie's best. Glad you enjoyed it!!

Lose Your Blues And Laugh At Life - Jimmie Revard & His Oklahoma Playboys
Great song. later I played Kenny Rogers & The First Edition version of "I Just Dropped In To See what Condition My Condition Was In." In 1998, the song appeared virtually in its entirety (with the bridge and the final few seconds of the fade out cut off) during a psychedelic dream sequence in the cult filmThe Big Lebowski. A clip of the song is also the background music for the main menu of the collector's edition DVD.
Bad Moon Rising - CCR
Big Brother - Rare Earth - In Concert & later I played the CRA's version.

The *ONLY* way to hear this masterpiece from The Much Regretted Mister White (G.R.H.S.) is in its FULL-LENGTH UNCUT GLORY!
I earnestly hope that the folks at Universal Music *shall* one day re-issue this gem as such..
And even *if* The Esteemed Wise One, Harry Weinger, Keeper Of The Flame at Motown has *no* decision making jurisdiction over *this* tune (Barry was with 20th Century when this came out...and now the 20th material is owned by Mercury at Universal) he *CAN* talk to his colleagues at Universal and mebbe drop a friendly hint or two, yes??
Talking of Mr.White, I am playing in very heavy rotation Hall and Oates 2005 covers album "Our kind of Soul" which contains a killer version of Can't get enough of your love". The stand out track on the disc is Dan Hartmans "I can dream about you" a song that Dan wrote for H & O back in the day, but the guys only got round to cut it for this release...
This CD is awesome, I have never heard Daryl sounding better.....19 tracks of singing at its very best...
Termite Don't remember Eito man but I do remember Johnny Sakko and his Flying Robot.
Ewwwwww...
As an aside, I wonder if *you* had the same arguments/debates with *your* classmates & childhood chums over Who-Could-Whip-Whom-In-A-Fight: Ultraman or The Flying Robot.
More than a *few* of us were of the opinion that Ultraman ("UotaroMan" in his native Japanese) would've beaten The Giant Robot's tail...after all, The Robot had to make those gesticulations and such to unleash his weaponry, during that time Ultra would've done a Ray ("Boom-Boom") Mancini on Robot before you could say "Warren Kremer".
It's a *huge* pleasure to listen to these, as well as LOTS of other television Signature Tunes (*Sigh*...I *miss* Ronnie ["Are You Being Served?" Hazelhurst!)...when I had a VCR (This series is *not* available on DVD....*yet!) I used to W-E-A-R O-U-T the copies of the tapings of the programmes just to hear the Signature Tune (Ditto with the Alvin Lee & Ten Years After WOODSTOCK performance of "I'm Goin' Home"..)

Hey Dave it snowed last Saturday night so I spent 4@1/2 hrs shoveling on Sunday morning, now as I sit here on Wednesday afternoon listening to The Doors Greatest Hits it is snowing again.Could be 10-20 cms of snow , freezing rain, rain overnight. Seeing this December 9th it is going to be a long winter. Oh yea chomp! chomp!
I can hear the chomping from here!! All we are getting is rain rain and more rain. Its hammering it down again right at this minute. We've had 50 consecutive days of it apparently. however, this is supposed to be the turning point and we are likely to turn colder and frosty at long last. Who knows, I might be chomping too very shortly .
Dave Rainy season? Be thankful it isn't all snow, just think if it was you would have to dig a tunnel in order to get out of the house.Today I spent 6 hrs shoveling the damn stuff, it was the wet heavy kind.I got started at 6am and finished just before noon.So I sit here this evening hoping it does not snow again until I get some of my energy back, listening to ZZ Topp's XXX with a cold adult beverage in my hand. Have a Fullers for me, didn't you say they made Jack Frost beer? If so have one of those.catch ya later!
Dave No Jack Frost ? Have a Honey Dew it's good for what ails ya. The 6hrs was from helping out at the old folks home that is up the road a bit.My turntable is indisposed until after the holiday season. My wife has taken over and placed a manger on it, so it will be cds 'till the new year. I listened to Joe Walsh- The Best Of, Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra- Holiday Romance. It has been sunny here but man cold, wind chill of -15c. Here's one for ya we were on our way to town Friday and what should come on the local rock station, Born to Wander, so I got to groove to some Rare Earth while toolin' down the road. catch ya later!
Besides Christmas carols, my wife has played Boney M cd it seems like everyday, I have been able to squeeze a few greatest hits cds while having a few cold ones. 1 Chilliwack 2 Huey Lewis @ The News 3 Kansas 4 The Partridge Family 5 Deep Purple 6 Five Man Electrical Band 7 The Stampeders 8 Ian Thomas 9 Boston
Hey Al, I always loved Huey and the boys. I've seen them at least 4 times live and they never disappoint. Many people write them off as being soft but once they catch the band live they soon change their views. Favourite album is Small World.
Oh noooooooooo not disco! I haven't heard Donna Summer in, well I don't remember. Good one Termite. Dave Got some snow here, it started last night around 10 and it is now 4:30 in the afternoon and it is still snowing.Chomp!Chomp!
On Christmas Eve day I had the house to myself and just laid down on the couch and listened to some tunes ZZ Top- Antenna Stevie Ray Vaughan @ Double Trouble-Couldn't Stand The Weather ACDC- Powerage
That was all I was able to get in, the house filled up with family and the Moosehead Pale Ale began to flow
I discovered this new progressive rock band, called "I.N.", short for "Intrinsic Nature" that I have listening to, on You Tube. You can tell that they favor the sounds of ELP, early Genesis, etc. I also just found a rare recording of "Nowhere to Run" , the Martha Reeves and the Vandella's hit, without the voices, on You Tube. Made an MP3 of it, I like it so well.
Hello Steve how ya doin'? Haven't heard from you in a dog's age.Did Santa find you ?I checked out Intrinsic Nature on you tube like you suggested, not a bad sound at all. Dave it snowed here all day Saturday, here we go again. Chomp!Chomp! Time for an adult beverage to drown my sorrows. The Moose is loose Listened to The Beatles- Let It Be
Got my turntable back in operation so here goes. 1 Herman's Hermits- Introducing Herman's Hermits 2 Herman's Hermits- On Tour 3 The Doobie Brothers- The Captain And Me 4 James Taylor- In The Pocket 5 .38 Special- Wild Eyed Southern Boys 6 Joan Jet @ The Blackhearts- I Love Rock n' Roll 7 Fleetwood Mac- Rumours 8 ELO- A New World Record 9 Mississippi- Mississippi 10 The Box- Closer Together 11 Jackson Brown- Hold Out 12 Edward Bear- Edward Bear 13 Toronto- Get It On Credit 14 Donald Fagen- The Nightfly 15 Leon Redbone- Double Time 16 Rare Earth- Get Ready

Mark Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road one of my all time favorites the rest are pretty good tunes also, I remember them well.Reminds me of bell bottom jeans and platform shoes, oh! my aching feet.
Noooo, not disco! Thanks Martin Taras Revue or should I say Dr Who? Though as I type this it is Star Trek , Devil In The Dark is on the tube. Listen to these LPs 1 Jimmy Buffett- Coconut Telegraph 2 Maghogany Rush-IV 3 Iron Butterfly- In- A- Gadda-Da-Vida 4 Lighthouse- Sunny Days
Very well....here's one fer the Prog Rock fiefdom who lives by the Holy Creed that Thou-Shalt-Not-Play-ANY-Short-Edited-or-Otherwise-Truncated-Slash-Censored-Version-Of-A-Seven-Minute-Plus-Masterpeice-ONLY-In-Its-Full-Length-Uncut-Glory.
Such as choice #3 that Big Al put here (See above)
THIS one comes from the famed E.M.I. - HARVEST label, and was the trio's *only* LP fro 1971...though the Eponymous QUATERMASS LP *DID* get a reissue in the late 1970's on the HERITAGE greatest hits series.
3 Iron Butterfly- In- A- Gadda-Da-Vida.......so....you listened to both sides, Al ???
Mark You know I did brother just finished listening to Slade and Quatermass that Martin Taras Revue/T3 found for us all to enjoy. keeeeeeep 'em comin'!
The International Perspective Hour (or parts thereof):
From Belgium, a electro-techno-metal-pop trio called The YOUNG GODS, with "L'eau Rouge" (1989)...get yer own BERLITZ translation guides if ya need 'em...but the gist of the lyrics is about the fella loving making love to his woman when she's, uh, menstruating (hence the title and the chorus "The One That All The Men Say....Burns"..)
The SADISTIC MIKA BAND from Japan, and the tune "TIME MACHINE" from their sophomore release "BLACK SHIP" (1975). That album, featuring this track (Side "A"- Cut 2) was produced by CHRIS THOMAS (ROXY MUSIC, INXS, The BEATLES, KOKOMO), and was led by vocalist MIKA KATOH and her then-husband KAZUHIKO KATOH. (Who committed suicide in October 2009).
Once again, the BERLITZ guides are gonna be YOUR responsibility!
And, in step with tryin' to keep it in the MOTOWN family:
Andre Lewis best known to his fans as the helmet-masked MANDRE, with his God-like touch on all things synth & keyboard, released 3 FAB albums on MOTOWN in the 1970's, and even toured with RARE EARTH & PLATINUM HOOK in 1978. Believe it or not, MANDRE was a BIG hit with the College Stoners Back-In-The-Day. At least they were in MY fiefdom, at DePaul & Northwestern in Chicago.
He also lent a hand to works by other giants at The HITSVILE Empire, such as DIANA ROSS & MARVIN GAYE, and TATA VEGA.
These two masterpieces are from his sophomore LP.
Originally Side "A"-Side, Track 3, a *very* excellent rendition of STEPHEN STILLS' "FAIR GAME":
The closing cut ("B"-Side, Track 4), "DOING NOTHING, NOTHING DOING" ... as one of the magazineadverts said, MANDRE was (And still is, IMHO) AHEAD OF THIS TIME:
International perspective, does that mean culture? Thanks Martin Taras Revue first time I have heard of these tunes, so keep 'em comin',As for me besides these four tunes I've listened to these LPs 1 Eagles- Eagles 2 Myles @ Lenny- Myles @ Lenny 3 Rare Earth- One World 4 Carly Simon- No Secrets 5 Dino Desi @ Billy-Souvenir
Dunno about any of you True Believers for The World Outside Of The United Kingdom (Sometimes I think I'm the ONLY Stateside fella that digs this'n), but this was (And still *is*) a GIVEN hit dance classic.
Comprised of TONY O'MALLEY, FRANK COLLINS, DYAN BURCH, PADDY McHUCH, MEL COLLINS, JIM MULLEN, NEIL HUBBARD, TERRY STANNARD, and The Much Regretted ALAN SPENNER, for this 1975 recording only, KOKOMO threw down a SUPERB rendition of BOBBY WOMACK's "I CAN UNDERSTAND IT"
Back in High School, all of my classmates used to deride Yours Truly's devotion to this jam by describing the first part as a hybrid between....Earth, Wind, & Fire, The Average White Band, and.............The Partridge Family....and then segueing into (in their words) "Hard Disco"
Still & all, this is...to this day...my ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE by the band!
Okay, folksies....sing along with me, all together with FEELING:
One last entry into the till before I call it a day (or "night", as the case may be..) and settle in watching the WGN News(Chicago), FOX News (Denver) & BBC News (on PBS)...
The closing track from The UNDISPUTED TRUTH'S 1975 Motown LP, "COSMIC TRUTH"....an' doncha' just dig how The Much Regretted NORMAN WHITFIELD reutilized the spacey echo vocal intro that was used in the same hit in 1970 for Pete & Co.?
The famed classic "(I Know) I'M LOSING YOU"
P.S. - I neglected to include the lovely JODIE LINSCOTT in the 1975 KOKOMO line-up...which, for "I CAN UNDERSTAND IT", also included guest artiste ANNE-ELOISE ODELL on ARP synthesiser
Well Martin Taras Revue nice try, you almost had me pulling out some disco.Almost had me boogieing across the floor.Believe me that wouldn't be a pretty sight!Keep 'em coming.Instead of disco I put on Ten Years After - A Space Of Time, The Doobie Brothers - Stampede
Dave it snowed here last Wednesday CHOMP! CHOMP!Today it is SUNNY!!!!!!!! I can here the snow melting. Hey is Jack Frost out yet?
Hey you guys are making me feel thirsty lol... I recently bought a DVD of The Spinners, so I have been in a BIG Spinners mood all week... So I was chilling this afternoon to the brilliant 2 cd Atlantic Anthology set on them, and by total contrast this evening I have been listening to Clapton, Montrose, Doobies and Bad Company...
Who knows what tomorrow might bring music wise lol..........
Both from the 1976 Double-LP-and-a-half "SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE" by STEVIE WONDER:
First the gem "ANOTHER STAR" (The conclusion to the proper Side 4 part of the LP), this guest stars HUNGRIA CARMELO GARCIA on timbales, as previously heard on congas from "IT'S BEEN OH SO LONG" by the 1974 Motown band he served in, "RIOT":
Second, from the "Something Extra" EP of said album. Cut 1, Side "A": "ALL-DAY SUCKER" featuring some BITCHIN' axemeister work from one W.G. "SNUFFY" WALDEN, who also had a MOTOWN connection apart from this; In 1975, MOTOWN distributed the Custom Label MANTICORE, devised by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. One LP, entitled "While You're Down There" , by Walden's Los Angeles-based band "STRAY DOG", came out under the Manticore umbrella in 1975. You'll OVE it...once you FIND it!
Dave You sound like a taste taster for Fullers, just think of all those samples. Also if you want some snow I'd be more then happy to send you some.I've been listening to ZZ Topp- Tejas, The Allman Brothers - At The Fillmore East, The Beatles- Hey Jude, The Doobie Brothers - Toulouse Street. Richard The Spinners, alright, now I'll have to dig into my music crate and see if I have some.
Two ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA RAVE-FAVES of mine from Back In The Day...
Mebbe representing a genre that you Fellow True Believers may *not* be into...but these are soooooooooooooooooooooo hlarious! FUN!
"CHICKEN TRAIN" - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils
From their Eponymous 1973 debut LP on A&M. That LP, of course, spawned the big hit "If Ya Wanna Git T'Heaven"..Hilarious!
"UNEASY RIDER" - Charlie Daniels
From his 1971 debut LP, "HONEY IN THE ROCK" * on Kama Sutra. Daniels is best known for his mammoth 1979 hit "The Devil Went Down To Georgia".
Now, is *this* like, Ahead-Of-Its-Time RAP? That's passing itself off as Country-In Disguise? Or just a funny ditty with a wee bit of sociopolitical message offering? YOU decide fer yerselves, m8's...
By the way, extend Get-Well wishes to Mr. Daniels to-day; You see, he suffered a minor stroke this past weekend. But, true trooper that he is...he still plans to tour this Summer.
One last Dark Horse *Under The Wire* Entry before I tune into the evening news & "Family Guy" & then turn in for the night:
"GIMME MY MULE" - The COMMODORES
From the 1975 Motown LP "Hot On The Tracks", produced by James Carmichael and The Commodores (Carmichael is best-known for co-producing a masterpiec e of an LP in 1977 for Pete, Gil, Ed & Co. )
The lyric, of course, makes references to the historical 1865 speech by General Sherman, promising every freed slave family "40 acres of confiscated land and an Army mule".
This NEEDS to see NEW LIFE on CD. Talk to The ESTEEMED WISE ONE, Harry Weinger, KEEPER OF THE FLAME at Motown about it one day, eh?
* - Post Script in re: Charlie Daniels & "Uneasy Rider": The "Honey In The Rock" LP was later re-released on Epic Records in 1973, when CBS bought out Daniel's Kama Sutra contract.
This one is one of my ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE from the days when the infant eye of MTV first opened. Ironically I saw the original clip on WFLD TV-32 back home in Chicago in 1981 (It was a syndciated hour long programme called The M.V.-3 [NOT to be confused or associated with The MI-5])
Enyyhoo, this comes from an alumnus from the famed IAN DURY & The BLOCKHEADS..his name, CAHZ JANKEL, and the jam...is the title track from his 1981 LP...Track 4, Side "B"... "QUESTIONNAIRE"
Version One
Version Two
By the way, this is comes to ya in TWO versions; The 1st is merely a still of the LP sleeve front; The 2nd one is the video that was, then, VERY ahead of its time.
There IS an alternate (2nd) version of this video (Screened on said TV programme)with some American-animated footage interspersed in places....in particular a Black-And-White scene - reminiscent of the old FLEISCHER BROTHERS films of the '30's - '40's - ably animtaed by CARL OSOLIN & JOSEPH FILICKO
Oh, yes, and to BIG AL in CANADA......I *did* pick up my FIRST copy in London, Ontario back then...and I bet that *you* were disco-ing and boogieing to that jam, too, werntcha?
Back in High School, all of my classmates used to deride Yours Truly's devotion to this jam by describing the first part as a hybrid between....Earth, Wind, & Fire, The Average White Band, and.............The Partridge Family....and then segueing into (in their words) "Hard Disco"
For those of you who *did* query (And I'm sure some of you *do*..), my schoolchums *did* know that *the* Prime Time (7-8 P.M.) TV block ALWAYS consisted of "The BRADY BUNCH" and "The PATRIDGE FAMILY"...so that so-called 'aspersion' that they attempted to cast twoards MY song, was, in fact, a COMPLIMENT!
Ennyoad...
Three from that bombasticiest of bombastic Early 70's groups...R.L. ("Bobby") HARRISON, MICKY MOODY, TERRY POPPLE, PETER SOLLEY, & COLIN GIBSON....SNAFU
From the Eponymous 1972 LP debut - a STERLING cover of KENNY GAMBLE & LEON HUFF'S jam "DROWNING IN THE SEA OF LOVE" (origianlly on JOE SIMON)
For those who care, this...along with the bulk of the original LP's tracks...is now featured in a 2-CD reissue from ANGEL-AIR, with several of the tracks treated to a *very* radical remix..this one for example crashes right in at the beginning, as opposed to the original vinyl's fade-in heard here in this clip.
"LOCK AND KEY" (Version One, 1974) - From the sophomore relase "SITUATION NORMAL"
"LOCK AND KEY" (Version Two, 1975) - From the third (& final?) LP "ALL FUNKED UP"
Note that PETER SOLLEY appears here in name *only* - as co-composer of this tune with HARRISON & MOODY; He was replaced on this LP by 2 keyboardists, BRYAN CHATTON & TIM HNCKLEY
IMHO, for *my* money Version 1 is the BEST one...though Version 2 kinda grows on ya after a few decades....
So which fave is YOURS?
And now...For BIG AL Of CANADA EXCLUSIVELY! (Kinda...)
"WELLS FARGO" - BABE RUTH from their UBER-MEGA-ULTRA SUPERB 1972 debut LP "FIRST BASE" (If I'm not mistaken, "WELLS FARGO" burned uupthe airwaves up in The Provinces & territories Back In The Day, yes?
The FINALE (for now, anyway)
From Fellow Detroiters (For PETE & CO. that is, not me..) DON WAS & DAVE WAS, collectively known as WAS (Not Was), and their excellent...and highly underrated 1981 LP "BORN TO LAUGH AT TORNADOES" and the very esoteric and brilliant gem, featurinf Special Guest MARSHALL CRENSHAW, "THE PARTY BROKE UP" ..
And so....that's it from us here at Cartoon Central. Now it's dinner and a movie for me and my gal. We plan to see "SKIN"...based on a true story in Apartheid-era South Africa. I know it's gonna be DEEP!
Another array of musical history, the 70s are alive and well. keep 'em comin' Martin Taras Revue. How was the movie?I've just watched a couple of episodes of The Trailer Park Boys. For those who don't this TV show it is about bunch of dope growin' booze drinkin' shopping cart stealin' good Canadian boys. Been listening to : Radio Active Cats - Radio Active Cats Steve Forbert - Alive On Arrival
While driving my wife to work today I passed a corral with four horses standing up against the fence and the first thing that came to mind was the cover of a James Gang album with three horses tied up outside Carnegie Hall. So as I type this James Gang - Live In Concert is spinning.Earlier today it was Huey Lewis And The News - Picture This.
One Jack Frost down, two to go. I guess I must be slowing down :)
Picture This is good HLN album. My fave Huey album is Small World. The boys are currently working on an album of Stax covers. The need to create an authentic sound has made them steer clear of the more obvious hits from the label because they felt it would just be like issuing a copy of the originals. The project is shaping up well apparently. They did a similar thing in the 90s when they recorded Four Chords and Several Years Ago. It included great versions of Shorty Long's Function at the Junction, Don Covay's Better to have and Not Need and my personal favourite, an ace version of Good Morning Little Schoolgirl by, err sorry, you'll have to tell me! Oh yeah, Sonny Boy Williamson.
I caught a gig on the Four Chords tour and the section where they did these covers was out of this world. It's a shame that so many people write Huey Lewis and The News off as boring and lightweights. Not true. I've taken friends to see them who thought exactly that. They were sold on the band within 60 seconds of them striking up. What's more, there's lots of life in the not so old dogs yet.
Dave All it means is you are savouring the taste of a fine beer. None of this slowing down stuff, sounds to much like getting old.I've never seen HLN I would like to.The new album you mentioned with the Stax covers sounds like it will be good.Ive always liked the Picture This album from the first heard it. Listened to a few Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Boulevard Cats Can Fly - Cats Can Fly ZZ Topp - El Loco Jimmy Buffett - Changes In Latitudes Changes Attitudes Doobie Brothres - Greatest Hits Live Jackson Browne - Running On Empty Jeremy Fisher - Let It Shine Chilliwack - Greatest Hits
How was the movie?I've just watched a couple of episodes of The Trailer Park Boys. For those who don't this TV show it is about bunch of dope growin' booze drinkin' shopping cart stealin' good Canadian boys.
The film *exceeded* my expectations...
Disturbing, appalling & disgusting in *lots* of areas...for *obvious* reasons..
But...an *important* and *valid* slice of history that, like WWI, WWII, et al...MUST be documented, recorded, AND paid *great* attention to!
As for the Trailer Park Boys...sounds like they might kinda sorta mebbe...be some relatives of The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (NOT a telly series....but a renowned underground comic book series that is STILL looked at to being a feature film for the future..)
Is the series CBC? Global? or what?
Ennyroad, back to our show:
From Mandre's eponymous 1977 Motown debut, the gem that first put 'im on th' map:
"OPUS I (SOLAR FLIGHT)"
And, keeping within the tradition at MOTOWN, with giving a hand to fellow Hitsville Empire Minions Back-In-The-Day..
Mandre (Under his Civilian Alias of Andre Lewis) provided arrangement assistance for the 1978 re-do of the 1974 LEONARD CASTON composition "I'LL KEEP MY LIGHT IN MY WINDOW"
As an aside, Keyboardist CASTON made his MOTOWN debut on The RARE EARTH label (Well, what else BUT?!?) in the ensemble The GOD SQUAD Featuring LEAONARD CASTON for the one-off 1971 LP "JESUS CHRIST'S GREATEST HITS"
The original version of "LIGHT" appeared on CASTON's 2nd MOTOWN endeavour "CASTON & MAJORS" in 1974. The "MAJORS" in question is CAROLYN MAJORS (Mrs. CASTON)
Led by ROY WOOD, and soon to transmogrify - with the assistance of future member JEFF LYNNE - into what would be The ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, The MOVE, with the **VERY** SYD BARRETT-ish classic from 1968 : "(Here We Go 'Round) The LEMON TREE"
From Suburban Cleveland, Ohio...one of the FEW things of ANY distinction to come from THAT area...Two from the Early 1970's powerpop band led by classically-trained impressario ERIC CARMEN, The RASPBERRIES...
"I WANNA BE WITH YOU" (You should excuse the ****-ups in the printed lyrics...this is not me, but rather from the *original* video contributor...Of course, he *MEANS* well!)
"(Please) GO ALL THE WAY"
And finally,
From the eponymous 1977 debut LP by the showband comprised of RAT SCABIES (LOVE that name!!), DAVE VANIAN, CAPTAIN SENSIBLE, & BRIAN JAMES
"STAB YOR BACK" - A nice, neat ,simple under-a-minute ditty by THE DAMNED!
Martin Taras Revue The RE web site's DJ comes through again. As for the Trailer Park Boys,it is on Showcase. The afternoon showing is edited for content, the evening showing is not.It is a funny show BUT! it is NOT! for kids. Richard I don't have any Spinners albums but I did play Elton John- The Thom Bell Sessions, which The Spinners did the backing vocals. Also played: Chicago- Eight The Four Seasons- Who Loves You Commodores- Heroes Otis Reading- The Dock Of The Bay The Nylons - One Size Fits All Styx - Paradise Theater Charlie Daniels Band - Fire On The Mountain Elton John /John Lennon - This is a three song 45rpm LP sized record of Lennon's last public appearance Nov. 28 '74.These songs were also released on the remastered EJ CD Here And There in '95. We listened to these on Sunday afternoon, it was sunny outside but it was -14c -wind chill of -23c so I never left the house.
This offering, which I cannot recall if I'd presented prior, is from the 1960's ensemble from The HITSVILLE Empire, The MONITORS. Most famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view) for their late '60's re-do of fellow MOTOWN mates, The VALADIERS' "(Greetings) THIS IS UNCLE SAM"
Member RICHARD STREET, who doubled his income by serving in QUALITY CONTROL at MOTOWN, later was drafted into service with The TEMPTATIONS. Unable to find a suitable replacement, The MONITORS, sadly, disbanded.
As an aside, the striking thing about THIS gem, "CAN'T GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU" (1966)...is how MUCH it sounds VERY much like something that the 1970's band WAR mighta done; The thing is...THAT band wouldn't come into existence for ANOTHER FOUR YEARS!
This little ditty comes from a CLASSIC BUBBLEGUM BAND, based on a Saturday Morning Animated telly series of the 1960's & 1970's, which was based on a series of classic comic magazines and a comic strip of the 1940's to the present.
"BANG-SHANG-A-LANG" by The ARCHIES
This features RON DANTE as "Archie"'s lead vocal...other notable musicians and vocalists have over the years included HUGH McCRACKEN, CHUCK RAINEY and even Country-And-Western humourist & punster RAY STEVENS.
THIS UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE o'mine...is, perhaps, the ONLY acoustic ditty that NEEDS to be played at NO LESS THAN VOLUME TEN! Understandable, considering it *does* come from none other than LED ZEPPELIN.
"POOR TOM" - incidentally - was the song that I met The Love Of My Life, Mellisa to; She was dancing to it on the stereo of a Youth Club when I first saw her...wearing hot pants, a sky blue T-shirt, and...this bit FLOORED me...ankle length 'baby' socks and saddle shoes.
'Nuff Said...YOW!!!
From the legendary Bluegrass duo of FLATT & SCRUGGS (With The FOGGY MOUNTAIN BOYS), comes "FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN", kinda sorta like an ANTHEM for Bluegrass & all things Country, really...and if it *does* sound familiar toa lotta ya...that's 'cause it was in the soundtrack of the cinema classic "BONNIE & CLYDE"
BECK - he only uses his FIRST name (Full name : BECK HANSEN), so he's NOT to be confused with the ace axemeister with the same LAST name - throws down with this UBER-MEGA-ULTRA CUTTING EDGE gig, "THE NEW POLLUTION".. It caught MY attention because the basic rhythmic undercurrent sounds SO VERY MUCH like a certain classic jam from 1969, that runs about 20+ minutes or so....whadda YOU think?
"Like a whipcrack, sending me shivers".....YOW! Like, that's DEEP!
The RUBINOOS were a West Coast (San Franscisco) based power pop ensemble, led by JON RUBIN...and were on the BERSERKLEY label (A pun on the label's home, Berkeley), distributed by CBS. This is from their eponymous 1977 debut LP, and the final cut of the "A"-Side, "ROCK AND ROLL IS DEAD (And We Don't Care!)"
A timeless classic from the Grand Dame of Classic Pop, PEGGY LEE (G.R.H.S.), and an ALL-TIME UBER-MEGA-ULTRA RAVE-FAVE o'mine, not to mention being rather deep, philosophical and pondering, "IS THAT ALL THERE IS?"
From 1970's axemeister ensemble RAM JAM, and their throwdown 1977 classic "BLACK BETTY", a cover of a Blues/Folk ditty by HUDDIE LEDBETTER, better known to the masses as LEADBELLY.
Nigerian-born, London-raised drummer & percussionist GASPAR LAWAL (We all heard him prior on BABE RUTH's "WELLS FARGO" playing congas & bongoes) with his funky jam "KITA KITA"
THIS BULLETIN *JUSTIN!!*
