 Who is singing " Under God's Light" on "One World" ? Is this you, Ray, or  is it Mark?

to continue regarding mark olsen...he sang lead on the song "the biz" which RE began to perform in 1982-3 in their live sets.  The song, written by Gil, Ray, Mark and Eddie became "all or nothing" and was included on the CD Made in Switzerland from 1989 which sadly Mark wasn't on as I belive he passed away around that time and had left the group some years before.

On an up-note...I was reading the notes on the back cober of "get ready" and the writer talked about meeting the band at a session shortly after midnight July 4th. That would've been in '69. Well, guess who popped out exactly seven years later on the same day...Moi! biggrin

  Very sad, Mark.  

   I just oredered Pete's book, and I will read all the details about the deaths of band members John, Mark and Ed.  I was shocked and didn't know it until I came here, that John and Mark had both passed away.  I can't remember where I read about Ed, but, I knew this some time ago. 

  John is the second famous person I admired who lost his life after surgery.  The other was Dan Blocker( Hoss), who died from a blood clot in the lungs after having had his gall bladder removed. 

 Ever since I heard this news about John I find it difficult to listen to "Any Man can be a fool", which at the end of the song concerning his mother's death, always brought tears to my eyes anyway. I don't know that his mother really passed as he  said in the song, but that part always got me, and still does.  I much preferred John's bass playing to Mike Urso's, due to John's using a pic and his overall playing.  I don't mean any disrespect towards Mike Urso, of course.

I'll never forget when I read about Mark's and Eddie's passing  (in the booklet for the "Earth Tones" cd.) As a big RE fan, you could've knocked me down with a feather. Strangely, the booklet didn't mention John Persh. When I had the opportunity (of a lifetme no less) to speak with Pete on the phone in '95, I asked him about Mark, Eddie and John. As a fan it was sad to hear what Pete told me. I felt bad askign him but as a fan, I was curious.

Speaking of John, I love it during "Get Ready" on In Concert when John does his solo. Right beforehand you can hear Pete say "Get down John". I enjoy John's singing on Train To Nowhere (nice cover of the Savoy Brown tune...big fan too), Nice Place To Visit and Any Man Can Be A Fool.

 Hi again, Mark

  This is very interesting about your wife being a distant relative of Dan Blocker.

Actually, there is quite a bit of info on him out there. I corresponded with the author of the book Bonanza: The Unofficial Story behind the Ponderosa, by Melanie Shapiro. She gives a bio on each of the cast members and his is the most interesting of them all, I think. Also, there is lots of stuff on the Internet about him that may be of interest to you and your wife.


Its funny that you mention the Hollywood thing and the name change. He mentioned in an interview that he kept his family away from it as much as possible due to the snubbery attitude among the stars.


Regarding John Persh againI recall your post about having seen Rare Earth when he was with them. How very fortunate of you to have seen them at that time. Believe it or not, the In Concert album holds a lot of emotion for me. I was all of 15 years old when it came out, participating in my first band, and, the tune Nice to be with you, closing the album always got me. In all the excitement and anticipation of what was coming in each tune, it added a bit of sadness, for me, when it was over, and the line We hope we made some friends showed that the band really cared about the fans. I suppose that this all sounds silly to some, but, that was just the effect it had on me.

I remember when I first heard "Nice To be With You"...I dug that song instantly. To me it said "we were on the road, did some shows, had a good time and hope you did too, made some friends and we'll be back again, hope to see you there".

THAT SONG HAS ALWAYS HAD A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE ALL BUT FINISHED WITH THE ALBUM.WE ALL THOUGHT WE NEEDED A SONG TO SUM UP HOW WE FELT ABOUT OUR FANS.

 Ray,

 Any fan who listens to the song would be able to tell your song was from the heart.  It, to this day, as mentioned before, is emotional for me because, for one thing, I always--always- think back on when I first heard it, and, also, as mentioned before, how sad I was after it was over.  The thing is, though... I don't know which brings a lump in my throat first; the lyrics or the music. 

 Thanks so much for sharing with us how you guys wrote this tune, and for sharing your appreciation for your fans.  I still can't get over what a nice bunch of people gather here and post.  It is so uncommon these days.

  It just goes to show that your music touches the heart and soothes the soul, Ray.

"Nice to be with you" is indeed a great song and it does stir up emotions after listening to one hell of a live show.

Another great song that rarely gets mentioned is "Think of the Children". Never mind Zesses / Fekaris, Norman Whitfield and the Brothers Gibb, there was an abundance of songwriting talent within Rare Earth, especially if you add the name of Tom Baird who was almost a member of the band up to and including Willie Remembers.

I too enjoy listening to the track "Nice To Be With. After purchasing "In Concert" my thoughts and feelings were very similar to Steve's. 
With all that's been said about the lyrics and message of this track I'm not certain if it was ever included in the band's live set. At least I don't recall seeing the band perform this tune live. 
Even though the song closed out the "In Concert" LP I recall the band usually finishing up with "Celebrate and "Get Ready". Did anyone out there ever see the band perform "Nice To be With You" live? Jocko D.
P.S. UK Dave, Think of the children is truly a brilliant song and one of my all time favorite RE tracks. It's also another song I would have loved to have seen performed live.

I really miss John: We were fishing buddies and had some un-believable laughing sessions. John was always up for that.....Wow, just to mentally picture some of those times makes me smile and cry at the same time. I remember how upset John was of learning of his mothers passing. We were doing a show and the news actually came just 5 min before our concert. Someone elected not to give the news until after the show. Bad Move...I don't think John ever got over that. I guess everyone makes mistakes. John was a forgiving person and I'm sure he got good with it. Yeah I sure miss him......

It is just one of those songs that touched my heart.

 I can't imagine what you go through, thinking back on a friend you spent time with who is now passed.  I have been blessed in that none of the friends I made over the years, closest to me, have passed away.  It has to be difficult.

 On a lighter note, Peter, did you receive my email?  Just wondered.

I know how you feel Steve. I feel the same way about my step-dad who is having certain health issues too. It hurts.


Any Man Can Be A Fool, John was doing what a true artist does...chanelling life and turning it into his art. 

Since last August when my best friend turned 30 I've been thinking a lot about

growing older...I'm 31 soon to be 32 by the way. I was thinking the other day about the pranks my friend and I used to pull in high school and "wow, that was almost half of our lives ago"...him being 15 and me 16 then. We're not spring chickens anymore. My life and priorities have changed completely in the last 7 years...a wife and 3 kids will do that. The parties (not that crazy) are the things of yesteryear. My friends and I still get together for lunch or the odd beer or two. But usually it's a limited time as we've got to return home to the wives or girlfriends. I guess we all have to grow up sometime.

Hi Steve and Mike

I echo your sentiments about your parents. Mine are elderly and I dread the day that I lose them. My Dad, like yours, is having health issues and it doesn't help him when he sees that old friends and relatives of a similar age are seemingly dropping like flies right now. At the same time I feel blessed that I'm one of the lucky ones who still has two parents to turn to when I need them. I think back to one day back in the late 70s when one of my best friends got a phone call at work telling him that his Father had died of a sudden heart attack. He was only in his early 50s. Only the other day I was visiting my folks and I wasn't in the best of moods. My father asked me something trivial and I snapped back at him. Later in the evening when I returned home I was mortified. He didn't deserve to be spoken to that way. I phoned and apologised next day. A week later a major electrical problem developed in my car which took 10 days to fix. My Dad was straight in to help, lending me his car till mine was fixed, saying he could cope without. My parents....still making sacrifices for their offsprings after 52 years!

    Thanks both of you for sharing your thoughts about this. 

Dave, I, too, am blessed in that I have both parents, although my real father passed away 11 years ago this April, my step dad is still fairly in good health.  My mom smoked for 5o years, and is now suffering some of the problems that comes with that, but, she is doing so much better now, having had surgery( the 3rd in 4 years) just two weeks ago, this Thursday. Thankfully, nothing is life threatening, it's just been little things here and there.  

 
I know what you mean about  feeling bad after you have done something hurtful to one of your parents.  Although I haven't done that in recent years, I never saw eye to eye wit my step dad, and once in awhile years ago, we would have disagreements.  Now, of course, we get a long well.  He mellowed, and so have I.

 Mike, I think that what you said about John "chaneling life and turning it into his art" is really what a lot of folks do with music.  I could never figure out how they get through those songs without losing control.  Certain Christmas songs do that to me. Just like "Nice to be with you", I end up with that ''lump in the throat". 

  I know what you mean about getting older...ya think back...and then realize time waits for no one...but you are still a young guy.  Wait til you hit 50!aww

Some songs have that power to really choke you up. "Love Shines Down" chokes me up, especially these lyrics:

maybe the pain will go away

I had a long standing girlfriend in college who was killed by a drunk driver. Senseless. disbelief.gif  These lyrics describe just how I felt at the time...and sometimes I still do.

I never knew the meaning behind that song until a few weeks ago when someone here said it. I never even picked up on any possible meaning behind the lyrics and I've had the album since 1991. Great song.

While on the subject of John's stuff...Nice Place To Visit sounds as if it's about Detroit after the riots and everything that happened in the late 60's...judging from what I've read of course. I wasn't there.

    This is kind of embarrassing, and I really didn't want to have to say this here, but I guess I have too...

  My sister tried to contact you via email, to find out whether or not checks or money orders can be sent to purchase the book. What she was receiving in  return was a statemnt that her " state, city and zip code were incorrect", and, she couldnt go any further to purchase the book. So, I actually haven't been able to order the book yet.

 She had to do this for me because my mail was being stolen( over a 3 month period) and I had to get the police and Post Master General involved, so, she was doing this for me so that it, too, wouldnt come up missing. My main suspect is my mailman.  I sent you an email, tonite , to a gmail.com account with your name attached, that came with her reply from , I guess your website?.  It bounced back the fist time, so, had to try again.  

 As far as what I would like for you to write to me, when I am finally able to order the book, I would rather leave that up to you, as I said, I feel funny asking you to inscribe something to me.  

 I deeply apologize for all this.

Hi Mark,

Thanks.

Yes, we went through his website to get the book.

When my sister typed in her state, city and zip code, it said it was ''incorrect''. It wasn't incorrect, though. Therein lies the problem. So, that is when I emailed Peter two days ago. She received an automated reply from his website( I am guessing) with his postal address included, and the name "Peter Hoorelbeke" as well as "Peter Rivera" is included. I was then going to write that address to inquire about sending a check, and just order that way, if possible.

Right now, I'm not crazy about using the Internet to give out personal information ( paypal) in light of these problems I had with my U.S.postal. Among the items that were stolen over the 3 month period are bank statements for the months of Oct. and Nov. I'm just a little nervous about this right now.

hello guys...

i am a bit confused on when rare earth became rare earthweirdface....did they become rare earth prior to the verve release of dreams/answers?? or did they change after??

I heard that peter's son's play pro baseball...Do they go under the Rivera or Hoorelbeke name?? And what team do they play on??
