I tell you one thing...   I just watched the guys in that 1973 clip of them doing Get Ready on YouTube.  Was **severely**disappointed that Ray was shown only from behind, and to his left very, very briefly, and you could barely--if at all-- hear his guitar.

I will say, that I have only heard 1 recording of them live where Pete did a drum solo, the "In Concert" album, and I had no idea his feet were as fast as they had become by 1973!  He always did phenomenal drum solos, but I honestly had no idea how fast his feet really were.

I am heavily into Carl Palmer( as well as Emerson, Lake and Palmer) and, in 1973, Pete 's feet were as fast as Carl's had gotten by the 90's, but, Palmer reached his peak, and now,no longer has the feet he once had, in the 90's.

Does Pete still play double bass pedal--even though he doesnt physically have the second bass drum there, nowadays? I assume that he uses a dual pedal?  Most drummers are using these now.

I want to see a Ray Monnette guitar solo!  Where can I find one?

Thanks,

 Steve

 Thanks, Rich.

I will have to check that one out.

I wish their whole performance would become available on DVD.

What I remember mostly about the CAl JAm performance is that Pete switched from his white pearl Slingerland drums to a black Ludwig drum set.  He had even added some extra toms, if my memory serves me.  I do not recall any of the tunes they did during the broadcast.  Admittedly, I had fallen away from Rare Earth at the time, and was so heavily into Emerson, Lake and Palmer ( obviously), and other progressive rock bands,  i.e. YES, Jethro Tull, et. al.  I came back to Rare Earth in the late 80's, mainly because of Ray's guitar work and Pete's drumming.  I also admit that I regretably stopped buying their albums , and never bought anything after "MA".

I saw them on "In Concert", with the new drummer, I think in 1975 or 1976.  Now, after watching that performance again on YouTube, for the first time since that aired, I can see that I must have had rocks in my head.
I remember the heavy set drummer doing a very good drum solo, and remember distinctly that he had a fast foot on single bass.  I do not remember Mark playing harmonica, but remember the dual sax solos by he and Gil.  Nor do I remember the Africa-American bassist.

   Thanks again, Rich.

 Thanks, and hi MDF,

Yes, thanks, I watched the Get Ready 7:00 clip, and saw Pete's fine drum solo.  The double bass drum playing was mind boggling. That guy was/is so underrated!

I was cracking up at Eddie. He stopped when Pete got going, and just folded his hands together and sits there with a big grin on his face.

This is the clip that disappointed me because Ray was hardly heard, and not seen at all.  NOT  FAIR!

Ray's conclusion to his solo in "Get Ready", on the " In Concert" LP heavy on the vibrato ( "whamy") bar, always fascinated me.  Every where I went---while mowing the lawn, riding my bike, taking a walk--I **constantly** had that solo going through my head.  I remember I had played that section so much that I literally ruined the record.  I would just listen to that over and over and over.  I had  to save up my money to go buy a second copy of the album.  I was 15, and I mowed a lot of lawns, to buy Rare Earth albums, drum sticks and drum heads.  I distinctly remember that the price of the album was $6.99.  That was a lot of dough for a kid!

I am with you, in what you say about panomiming the band!  My step dad once caught me, playing a tennis racket as a guitar to a Beatles tune, in 1965, and I thought he was going to kill me!  He expected me to be out playing football or baseball with the other kids!!  LOL!!!  Man was I embarrassed.

Thanks so very much for the heads up on the "In Concert" CD.  I will definitely have to get one.  I can still listen to it on my turntable, but you sure do miss a lot compared to CD!

 Thanks!

 Take care!

Steve

Steve. Rare Earth In Concert was the very first LP I ever purchased. Up until that point I had been glomming my older brother's 8-track tapes. Here in the northeast USA there was a "cheap Charlie" department store chain by the name of E.J. Korvettes who used to run large sale ad's in the local papers. Upon the release of "In Concert" in 1971 Korvettes had it on sale for $2.99 so it was kind of like the deal of the century to me at the time. My copy also got worn out quickly and eventually had to be replaced.  I couldn't even begin to tell you how many versions of "In concert" I had to purchase on 8-track for use in my vehicles during the 1970's. (8-tracks didn't last very long) I still believe the original "In Concert" LP purchase for $2.99 was one of the best deals I've made in my lifetime.  Jocko D

Steve I believe that's Jerry Lacroix playing harmonica on the Youtube 1975 version of "Get Ready" and not Mark Olson.
Mark did play some harmonica from time but not at that show.
It's funny because Jerry Lacroix was also an established saxophone player having been in Edgar Winter's White Trash but his job with Rare Earth was that of lead vocalist and there would have two much competition between three saxophone players in the band. So Jerry didn't get to do all that much sax playing during his tenure with the band.                                                                 Jocko D

The footage of Get Rrady is from a 1973 performance in New York at Hofstra University in Hempstead, Long Island for ABC TV (Dick Clark Productions). I have some Deep Purple footage form 1973 and the background/auditorium they are playing in is EXACTLY the same. Heck, the band may have been on the same bill. I'm willing to bet the unedited footage of Rare Earth's set is languishing somewhere.  Now that I think of it, it's be nice ot have a dvd of RE performances from:

American Bandstand
Ed Sullivan
1970 Atlanta Pop Festival
Hoffstra University 1973
Midnight Special 73/74
Don Kirshner 1975
Etc....

Mike, You never cease to amaze me with your wit and true love for music.

Rare Earth and Deep Purple did in fact play on the same bill at Hofstra University in 1973.
