Thanks for the warning jb. I've been looking at getting that. I shan't bother now. Sometimes these 2 on 1 deals are pretty good and can save space in the CD racks. Very often though, these third party re-issues are a big disappointment with poor sound quality and absolutely awful artwork, littered with errors and spelling mistakes.
Come on Motown / Universal, One World and Willie Remembers sold comfortably in their day, so lets have digitally re-mastered issues of these two albums on CD in their own right. We don't want anymore compilations of hit singles.
I was speaking to a UK musician last year about his band having had a "2 on 1" CD release. I commented that they'd left his name off the band line-up. He was lead vocalist and guitarist! He responded by saying the musicians usually don't get any royalties from these re-issues.
AS YOU ALL PROBABLY KNOW,THERE'S SEVERAL BOOTLEG C.D.'S OUT THERE ON THE BAND.
I CONTACTED UMG AND THEY ARE ON THE CASE TO STOP THIS CRAP.THE FOLLOWING IS MY LAST CORRESPONDENCE WITH UMG.
HI PAUL,
I RECEIVED IT FROM GIL BRIDGES(OF RARE EARTH).HE GOT IT FROM A FRIEND.I'M QUITE SURE IT WAS FROM E-BAY.I LOOKED AT E-BAY FOR R.E. C.D.'S,AND MANY OF THE BOOTS ARE FOR SALE THERE.
I BELIEVE THE ACTUAL COMPANY IS CALLED LAKE ERIE RECORDS.
ALSO,ON THE R.E. GEOCITIES WEBSITE,SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT THESE C.D.'S. THEY ALL SAID THAT THEY WERE REALLY BAD BOOTLEGS,AND NOT TO BUY THEM.
ONE LAST THING.......I DID A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR "ONE WORLD/ WILLIE REMEMBERS RARE EARTH C.D." I COULDN'T BELIEVE ALL THE SITES THAT WERE SELLING IT AND THE OTHERS.
BEST REGARDS,
RAY
P.S. THERE IS QUITE A DEMAND FOR THE RARE EARTH ALBUMS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN RE-ISSUED ON C.D. THAT IS WHY THIS IS HAPPENING.IF THE COMPANY WOULD RELEASE THIS MATERIAL THEMSELVES,I'M SURE IT WOULD ELIMINATE MOST OF THIS PROBLEM. IF YOU COULD GET THIS INFO. TO THE PROPER DEPARTMENT,I WOULD APPRECIATE IT.
I am writing from the anti-piracy team at Universal Music Group International. I intend to forward these details to the IFPI who deal with anti-piracy issues on behalf of the music industry. Before I do, could you please tell me where you found the advert for the bootleg? It looks like it may have come from eBay.
As fans, we can do our bit by refusing to buy these bootlegs. However, you have just stated to Paul at UMG that if the company issued these unreleased albums on CD it would help eliminate the problem. Is this an appropriate time for all the Rare Earth fans who visit this site, and feel the same way, to drop UMG an email to push for One World, Willie Remembers and maybe the later albums to be officially issued on CD? At the very least it can't do any harm. Who, within UMG, should we direct our requests to? I know Richard has tried and found it frustrating, but the current bootleg issue might just help the cause.
Besides the quality issues, I'd rather buy the genuine article knowing that the royalties were going into the writers' and artists' pockets, and let's face it, most of the material on OW and WR was self-penned.
THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.WHEN I TRIED TO CONTACT UMG,THE ONLY E-MAIL I COULD FIND WAS TO THE ROYALTY DEPT.SO...I WROTE THEM AND ASKED THEM TO SEND THE INFO. TO THE PROPER PLACE.THEY DID,AND I WAS CONTACTED BY THE PIRACY SECTION,AND PAUL.
AS YOU CAN SEE,I ASKED HIM TO GET THE INFO ABOUT RE-RELEASES TO THE PROPER DEPT.
HOPEFULLY,HE'LL DO THAT,BUT AS FAR AS WHERE YOU SHOULD DIRECT YOUR COMMENTS,I DON'T HAVE A CLUE.IT SEEMS TO BE A DIFFICULT PROCESS,AS RICHARD HAS FOUND OUT.
THEIR RESPONSE TIME AND GENERAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS ME WERE VERY POSITIVE.I'M HOPING THEY WILL TAKE HEED AND ACTION ON MY SUGGESTIONS.
I suppose Motown is just a small cog in the big Universal wheel and it might be counterproductive if Paul Gathercole was suddenly subjected to fans asking for Rare Earth re-issues. It might annoy him to the point where he just deletes the message instead of forwarding it.
Perhaps Richard can tell us who he's had contact with. I've seen loads of comments on the internet from people wanting the first 5 RE albums on CD. There's plenty of comments about "In Concert" being difficult to get hold of. These are the messages that never get to the people that need to know.
An unrelated question: Are any of the old management team still in place from the Berry Gordy days? I'm just curious as to whether Smokey Robinson remained on the board or did he leave as well?
there are thousands who come to the site who have never seen the band live.....so what! We buy the music, we love the music thats what being a Rare Earth fan is mate. I would think UK Dave knows more about the band than you, chill out.
I think the one world/willie remembers cd is on Razor records where as the get ready/ecology and in concert are the Lake Eerrie label.
I bought the One World Cd on Ebay and when I got to the Willie Remembers section I realised it was taped from a poor vinyl copy as some tracks you can here are scratchy and lo fi. I got ripped off and am angry with the industry for not doing anything to protect the artists work and of course us the public who goes out and pays the money.
From reading other threads it seems like a brick wall has been built and there is no way through to the people who have the power to say yes or no.
I could ask you the same question. I'm here because I love Rare Earth and have done since I bought that very first single "Get Ready" in 1970. How about you?
I don't mean to be rude, but if you had actually read my posts you would know the reason why I have never seen the band play live. The clue is in my name. Rare Earth have never played in the UK during their entire existence. Yes, I'd have flown to Holland or Germany to see them in the 90s had I known they were touring there. I'm here because I enjoy discussing the band.
I thought I knew a lot about the band but I've learned so much more by coming on here and asking questions and reading what others have to say. I didn't know Mark Olson played sax as well as keyboards for instance. It was just one of the things I found out about here.
So if you have something to share Jeff, please go ahead. The more people that join in, the more interesting it will get and it won't be me hugging the forum all the time. I know JockoD felt the same a while ago and he features less now. Thats a shame because I always enjoy his input.
Without regular contributors the forum would not exist. If it was buzzing like it should be, I'm sure Universal might take note and be more inclined to consider re-issuing some of those big selling albums on CD so we don't have to put up with bootlegs. Which brings us nicely back to the real topic of this thread!
Good to see that UMG are at long last taking an interest in the bootlegs, it's not only online that these things are available, I saw the Get Ready/Ecology disc openly on sale at a major London record collectors fair last year.
Ray, regarding the the re issue of the bands back catalogue, the guy you need to make contact with is Harry Weigner he is in charge of what gets released from the Motown back catalogue. I heard that the company Hip-oselect the specialist arm of UMG who have put out loads of Motown stuff were planning to put out a R.E. box set, so I sent them an email and Harry replied saying that a 3 cd set containing Get Ready, Ecology, One World, Willie Remembers and Ma plus some singles & b sides would be comming out, at first it was to be Dec 05 then I was told it had been put back and might not get released this year and would be out in 2007, Harry did say that this would be the first step in getting more R.E stuff out. www.hip-oselect.com is their site where you can contact him Ray.
I did mention the bootlegs to him and he said he was aware of them but did not say much more. Perhaps you and maybe Gil contacting him might help speed up things with this release, and he may be able to tell you the long term plans for the entire R.E. Motown catalouge.
It now seems that lake eerie records will put out RAREARTH/BACK TO EARTH as a 2on 1 cd. Now unless someone from universal can confirm lake eerie are legit we can only assume that they have allowed the bootleggers to win again.
Certainly does not look real to me, it looks cheap and nasty. Let's face it most of us could knock up a cover like that on our own pc's, in fact we could probably do a BETTER job
There are 13 on sale on ebay at the moment, and countless on line CD sellers have it listed, which bugs me.
I DIDN'T EXPECT TO HEAR BACK FROM PAUL. THEY HAVE THE BALL ON THIS PROBLEM,AND HOPEFULLY,THEY WILL STOP IT.
ALSO,NOTHING BACK FROM THE HIP-O SITE. I GUESS YOU HAVE TO WRITE 25 E-MAILS TO GET AN ANSWER. THAT'S PRETTY BAD CUSTOMER RELATIONS. AT LEAST HARRY TOLD YOU THAT THEY WILL BE RELEASING RARE EARTH PRODUCT. DON'T THEY HAVE A HISTORY OF BEING BEHIND ON THEIR RELEASES? I KNOW THERE'S MANY PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT A SUPREMES BOX SET THAT'S WAY OVER DUE.
