Rare Earth never made big waves in the UK regrettably. Nevertheless, I Just Want To Celebrate has sprung up on two current TV ads. One is for an anti-smoking product, the other is advertising a TV football show.
If memory serves me, I can recall listening to this song through headphones and when the breakdown came I'm sure I heard a drum machine faintly in the background. It probably bled from Pete's headphones into the live mics on the drums. I'd have to pull the song out for another listen to be sure.
That's not a drum machine, that's Eddie on congas.
You can those congas more on the 45 mix (in mono) of Celebrate right as the song goes into the breakdown, just before the edit. The LP version is in stereo and Eddie's congas are faded down in the mix during the breakdown, drums start back up.
Okay, I just gave it a listen and there is something very faint as the "round, round" vocals fade, just before the drums come back in. It sounds more like a snare than congas to me. It has a 'tap, tap ... tap ....... tap, tap ... tap' cadence. You must listen with headphones to hear it.

I know exactly what you're refering to. It's not a snare. It's either congas (or possibly a kick drum), albeit very compressed and buried in the mix.

It IS congas. Listen to the 45 version, as it is a different mix than the LP version. You can what was buried in the LP version/ I'd bet my life on it

Okay, I don't have access to the 45 but I will take your word on it. Thanks for clarifying.
The song pretty much sums up hoow I feel. No matter how crappy of a day I am having or if I am having a tough time, I'm still here...alive, living, and breathing.
What's all the fuss about it is not Rare Earth doing the anti smoking ad with celebrate ...just another crap cover band. pointless unless it's the real thing!
Pipe down. Who's making a fuss? Regardless of whether it's a cover band, I just pointed out that by coincidence there were two TV ads simultaneously using the the song on British TV. It's unusual because it's not a household song in the UK. It never made the charts. I just posted it in the hope that it might stimulate some conversation on the forum, which is quiet at the present time. No need for the sarcasm. If you don't find it interesting then that's fine. Close the door behind you.
Every time I see that song pop up on a commercial I tell my wife I wish I had the publishing on it. What really pisses me off is the use of all those cover bands, used only so the original artist doesn't have to be paid for the use of the song. How cheap can some of these corporations get?
