Stuart,

I'll keep an eye out for you as I too will be there. I stand 6'-5" wear glasses and a goatee. If the venue allows the band to sign autographs following their performance, I'll be nearby.

The last time Rare Earth played so close to home during winter, the skies gave way to some steady snow. I'll never forget driving up their with my wife. I drove, she navigated and had the distinict responsibility of keep the Lou Malnati's deep dish pizzas level so the toppings and cheese would remain balanced. Wouldn't ya know Lou Malnati's has a pizzeria on the way to this venue also.

Peace,

Chicago Tommy

Hey Tommy!  It looks like there are supposed to be blizzard conditions tomorrow night, wouldn't ya know it!!  I'll be sitting at a table by the front of the stage.  It will probably be easier for me to spot you than you me.  I'm only 5'9" and clean shaven.  Hope to finally meet you.

Al:  Will do! Except someone will have to remind me again how to post pics on this forum.  I completely forgot how I did it a couple of years ago.

Wow!!  What a show!  Great crowd, decent opening act, and Rare Earth just blew everyone away.  Gil and Ray were on fire, JR was just downright nasty and Bird and Mike were having a blast!  One of the best RE shows I've ever seen.  Large crowd despite the horrible conditions outside.  Spoke with Bird before the show and he said the band flew in from Detroit and arrived at 10:00am, right before the snows arrived.

Chicago Tommy, I did not see anyone who matched your description...so I assume you didn't make it.  It was really a rough drive getting out there from the city.  Took me nearly 2 hours when it should have taken 50 minutes.

I only took 130 pics....so I might have to edit them down a bit, lol.  Got some incredible shots that I can't wait to share.

Thanks again Gil, Ray, Bird, JR and Mike for really bringing it and always sounding fresh and enthusiastic.  I don't know how you do it.

BTW, they opened with Big John, which thrilled me to no end.  They had cut it out the last several times I've seen them, so it was a pleasue to hear it again after several years.

  Stuart,

Sorry I missed you, sounds like if I had one more green light traffic signal on the way to Viper Alley we would have met. I was there, in fact, I met up with Bird outside and we walked in together. Burr, a cold snowy night it was indeed.

I too was happy to hear the set begin with Big John, and the band's jams were so hot, I hear the venue may change it's name from Viper Alley to Viper Ash.

The set consisted of many Rare Earth classic hits a few recent cuts. I believe the set list was: Big John, Hey Big Brother, Born To Wander, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Give Me Shelter, Tobacco Road, Love You Save, I Know I'm Losing You, Get Ready and the encore was I Just Want To Celebrate. Wow jam packed.

Following the show, the band was present and signing autgraphs for fans and selling merchandise. My plan was to hang out and see if we could meet. The inability of the dressing room lock from functioning resulted in a need for some security. I suppose since I do a good Barney Fife (Don Knotts) impersonation and know the band, I was asked to stand guard. Keep in mind there was pizza behind closed doors. So, I stood guard. Had to "nip it" as Barney would say. But I, digress.

Check this out and you should be able to figure out where I was during the show.

Hi UK Dave,

Thanks for the compliment, but the band deserves all the credit. It was a hell of a show. I truly wanted to make the Saturday show in St. Charles, IL, but I knocked myself out shoveling snow and I had to drive up some pretty snow drifted highways at 1:30 AM. Got to bed at 2:45 AM and back outta bed at 5:30 to release (read, leash-walk and feed) The Hounds. Still, I celebrated my birthday on Thursday night, my actual B-Day was over the weekend. If the were aware of it or not, I celebrated my B-Day with my best friends.

Thursday night show was literally my very first time using that camera. Let me know what you think of this, but keep in mind the credits were the only editing done to the footage.

Peace,

Chicago Tommy

Looks great Tommy. That footage sounds and looks good. The guys all look and sound good too. smile

Next time Rare Earth plays Chicago area, I need to go. Maybe you, me and Stuart can hook up?

Nice to see that the guys played Big John Is My Name. It's one of my fave Rare Earth tunes. They played it when I saw them in May 2009...Ray's first gig back with the band. The didn't play it in November 2009 here in town but that's ok because they made room for 3 new songs and they sounded great.

My oh my...has it been over 2 years since I saw Rare Earth? Yes it has been! Time to get my Rare Earth fix methinks.

Hey Tommy,

I can't believe we missed each other...again.  Were you the guy taking pictures with a camera that had a very, very long lens?  I was sitting right in the front near Ray, right behind the two girls who had a table right at the stage.

Mike, I would love for the three of us to hook up next time RE is in the area. That would be a great time and a great deep dish pizza moment.
