I will like to start new topic..."Rare Earth alike...."
This is hard question, because there is so hard to find the band that come even close close to my fav Rare Earth.
That band must be honest, soulfull, great musicians, funky, rock, blues, great tunes and come as closest as possible to Rare Earth unique sound.
Here is the band that belongs to brass rock legends like Flock,Blood sweat & tears,Lighthouse,Chicago,Electric Flag,Pacific gas & Electric,ect......
...RASTUS,.....Rastus was one helluva band. No one wanted to open for them because they performed so well that they made the opening act look bad ...
Anonymous said... I saw this group only twice - both times in New Castle Indiana in '72 or '73. I thought they were even better than BS&T and Chicago combined....
...Rastus were a 9 piece band out of the Cleveland area that had a very Tower of Power meets Chicago kind of vibe. They appear to have released a second LP after this, but I can only vouch for this one. Goodnight Nelda Greb was one of my favorite 15 min. Rare Earth alike jam discoveries diggin in the crates last year, with its punchy horns and cymbal crashes with Urso-Rivera-Bridges heart pumping, head banging foot stomping sound....
This is rare album from 1970 on GRT label and long expired to get remastered CD-issue...
Rastus is available to dwld and here is the only link
Mmmmm, some similarity, but the full brass section dominates. I can't here a Rod Richards or a Ray Monette wailing guitar solo, nor the organ and piano of a Mark Olson or the killer congas from an Ed Guzman. I don't think the vocalists have the presence that Peter has, nor do I find the drum sound very interesting. Admitedly they sound like a good tight band, it's just that (in my view) Rare Earth sounded ten times better, not to mention funkier.
Thanks for the heads up on Rastus,I got curious and went to ebay to find that there are two Rastus LPs for sale.Their second was called Steamin'on Neighborhood records label.
I'm doing good, sore somtimes if I push it to hard at work, thanks for asking.I went to you tube and started watching Rastus videos.I like what I hear, the best band nobody ever heard of I think read there. The one I really liked was Pass The Peas/Make It Funky,it says it was recorded live in Chicago in 1973.Looking at the pictures of the band from that time reminded me that I was in high school and I looked alot like them, long hair, mustache,t shirt, bellbottom jeans.Holy crap the only thing I was able to hold on to was the mustache!Hey great band, again for the heads up.
Another Rare Earth vibe, this time from Europe, legendary in the Hungarian Rock scene...Their debut was considered experimental and hazy in Hungary, but the Western side saw it as the best new music that could come from the East. In 1972, the band was invited to play along legendary Joe ****ER or, right from the progressive top scene, with GENESIS. They also spend the year in London, recording a second album, "Ringasd el magad", or producing several music projects. With Tamás Somló replacing Frenreisz, and with a wide-popular tour through North America, LOCOMOTIV GT became a worthy big name. Their music consistently caught a much more artistic brightness (and all sorts of jazz, pop, funk, melodic, lyrical and experimental accents).
