Rare Earth: Funky Black Man 1974
Permalink

Folks, this one will get you excited so don't lose control of any functions: biggrin

I came across this on youtube:

I knew the band cut this song in 1974 but thought this was fake.

But there's no mistaking the playing and production as each element is heard:

That lyrical keyboard style and harmonica is Mark Olson

The drums and singing are Peter Rivera (Hoorelbeke)

That guitar is Ray Monette

The sax is Gil Bridges

The congas are Eddie Guzman

The bass is Mike Urso

The production and sound of the instruments clearly proves this is from the 1974 aborted Frank Wilson sessions.

Commence drooling.

Yes this is from 1974 and is on the master list of unreleased tunes.  It is from the Wilson sessions.

Bittersweet in a way.  This cut tells me that the Pete led Rare Earth still had plenty of gas left in the tank in 1974 (despite the gas shortages of the time, lol).

I agree Stuart. They had so much going. But it is what it is...fate sucks sometimes. hmm

I aksed my dad about the shortage at the time. He remembered it quite well. "A pain in the ass it was. That's when I started riding motorcycles...you could get your money's worth on a tank of gas".

The whole of the Frank Wilson sessions album would have put MA to shame.  Perhaps the holy man at universal is listening............ listen good to the fans for a change instead of the suits.

I certainly wouldn't call the guys knuckleheads evileye

Yes, it's sad they did break up. But it is what it is. No going backwards. I can only imagine the craziness going on. I wouldn't dare ask the guys about it because it's not my business. Pete's book sheds some light on things. Even though that's one side of the story, I've no doubt that it's pretty straightforward and honest.
