Today i was listening 8 minute song "One World" from Generation LP.
All i know that this was recorded as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. When the film stalled at the box office, the album was shelved.

My question is about this instrumental piece"One World".Very psychedelic,progressive jazz rock sound(like early Colosseum),but so far from RE sound(except Pete`s distinctive cymbals intro)

I love this piece,........and some more info about this is very appreciated.

The most information that Yours Truly can offer...is that parts of "GENERATION (The Soundtrack Album)" were rather *drastically* remixed for later release on "ECOLOGY" (1970) and the 2 CD set "ANTHOLOGY" (1995).

Personally, I feel the *original* 1969 mixes to be the **best**...as they obviously fit in with the producers' original vision...Moreover, when Motown committed to Rare Earth's "ECOLOGY" LP, it became apparent that the power-that-be at The HITSVILLE Empire wanated to, er, "sanitize" the recordings to make them more "pop-friendly", as opposed to catering to the FM Underground Radio sound that Motown never came to grips with, to quote essayist Don Waller in his 1983 "MOTOWN STORY" book.

Now, wouldn't it be just **KEEN** if Harry Weinger at Motown could find it in his heart to re-issue the *FULL* "GENERATION" album .. complete with *ALL* the *ORIGINAL* mixes as they appeard on the original album? (*Hint-Hint??*)

Maybe Pete, Gil or Rod could shed some light on why Eleanor Rigby, Stasfaction Guaranteed and Nice Place To Visit were remixed for Ecology. Honestly, I think the remixes of those songs are better. Bear in mind both Ecology and the Generation soundtrack were both produced by Tom Baird.

Eleanor Rugby has some great psychedelic guitar work from Rod. This performance/mix reminds me of Vanilla Fudge.

Nice Place To Visit...on Ecology the mix isn't as boomy...a little less kick drum. And John sings "no no noooo" during the fadeout...on the Ecology mix.

Satisfaction Guaranteed...both mixes are similar but not identical. There are some lead vocal differences here and there. But the biggest difference is Rod's solo. The solo starts out with the same licks but the body of it is entirely different. I think it was dubbed especially for the Ecology mix. And I also think it's a high point of Rod's guitar work for the band. And during the last moments of the song Rod plays some licks right before the song crahses to an end. That bit is not on the Generation mix.

 If Generation had been released, the band's path would've been different, While I enjoy the soundtrack as both a rarity and a missing piece of the Rare Earth puzzle...Generation might not have helped the band's career. Maybe it's because there's no obvious hits ON IT

I kinda dug the long, mourning chord of despair (WITHOUT the fade ot/re-fade in) at the end of "Eleanor Rigby" (The Original Mix)

The subtle differences in "Nice Place To Visit" are components that make ANY re-mix sooooooo interesting. (Think The Beatles stereo versus mono ["Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" WITHOUT the intor handclaps!!], and Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon"'s QUAD remix...with longer versions of "On The Run", "The Great Gig In The Sky" (With more audible spoken words), "Money" (With additional guitar passages, as well), and "Us And Them" (Not longer, but with additional saxophone passages)..

And, yes, I *concur* with the opinion that "Generation"'s release **might very wll** have been....detrimental to the band's future success...As Don Waller said it *so* succinctly, "Motown never came to grips with the FM Underground movement. So if a (single or album issued on the Rare arth label) failed to chart, (as far as Motown was concerned, the artiste) might as well have fallen off the edge of the world."

I have no recollection of the re-mixes on those songs for Generation. You know at the time we did the song Celebration, we were very busy with other shows etc. Motown had a habit of doing things when ever they wanted and we had many surprises. Maybe one of the other guys remembers something but for me..  Playin funky music all night long.Hey that's what turns me on.. Hey

The owner/moderator of this site, Big Rich, has the *official* vinyl LP in his ownership; And he did dub a tape for me some time back and I *did* compare the various different sounding mixes. You should query about his being able to send *you* a copy and play side-by-side "Generation" sountrack with "Ecology" tracks and compare....

Let me clarify a little smile

Three songs (Satisfaction Guaranteed, Eleanor Rigby and Nice Place To Visit) had new overdubs and/or were remixed from scratch for inclusion on Ecology. I wonder if it was Tom Baird who remixed those as he was the producer of both Generartion and Ecology.

Also, around that time there was a remix done of "In Bed" for a german 45 that has Eddie playing congas and cowbell. The mix on the Get Ready LP has Gil's tambourine throught the entire song. On the remix, his tambournine cuts off during the drum break in the middle of the song before the key change. And during that break you can hear Eddie's congas too.  

Oh man, I wish I could have access to those multitrack tapes. smile

Let me jog my memory..jog-jogsorry jogging doesn't help!  As I remember the reason Gil stopped the tambourine was because he laid it down to do his sax solo  After his solo he picks it up again and continues. Now that's what I call live.  The Ecology album was mixed in Chicago We all went for the mixing. I remember about 5 pairs of hands on the console moving faders.  We were all in on it  Lots of fun.  It's funny  we were all so new to the process. great memories.  Peter  As far as what mixes were used on Ecology, I think they used what we did in Chicago. Generation???? well I don't have any memories of that album's construction.  It was all so hurried    Peter

Both are great performances. I bet Gil's hand & wrist got a workout.

I didn't realize Ecology was mixed in Chicago. I figured that since it was recorded in Detroit, it was mixed there too. Where was it mixed at in Chicago? Do you recall? The main studios that were in Chicago then were:

RCA Studio (The Guess Who cut 3 albums and a few singles there)
Chess Studios (the list of artists who cut sides at Chess is long & distinguished).

I know of another Rare Earth album was that was worked on in Chicago...now gee, I wonder what that coud be? LOL.

Ok it's just me, UK Dave, this time. Couldn't resist. One too many beers smile though I have to say I'm with you on the anonymous thing when its not accidental.

Am I alone in thinking I'm not going to lose any sleep over the Generation LP. With it being a film soundtrack I've never found such albums very interesting (often patchy) and it seems anything worthwhile was probably salvaged for use on Ecology anyway.

In contrast I'd love to get my hands on Live in Chicago and Tight and Hot but I'm not holding out any great hopes, particularly with the former.

The owners /moderators is myself and of course Richard (Big Rich).

Mischief can happen when people post as admin and ann nominus

The problem is this..........you can not change the settings unless the system is set for members only, then everyone will have to sign in and I don't want to go down this route as it may then deter new people from posting!

We have had many obscene messages which are instantly (almost) detected and removed so it is well controlled 99.9% of the time

Titan (Mike) was at the end of a joker so no harm done.

Debate is the food of thought so keep rockin! biggrin

Here's an example of the different mixing:

There are some major differences:

1. In the 2nd verse when you sing "Anytime you tell me, baby that's the time I'll come to you", the vocal differs.
2. The Generation mix has more emphasis on the kick drum and congas
3. In the middle of the song call and answer of "ah ha" is more pronounced in the Generation mix.
4. Rod's guitar solo starts off with the same licks but after a bar or two...but the similarities end there. I like the Ecology solo better. It's one of Rod's best too. Way to go Rod!!!
5. In the final "crashing" seconds, there's a guitar bit only on the Ecology version. As the song ends you can hear someone faintly saying something. I think it's Rod saying "my hand hurts". What do I know?

Maybe I too much free time. Maybe I am a dedicated fan. Maybe I should've been a mixing engineer or maybe I just have good ears. But despite the different mixes, both are great.

Mebbe "Ecology" *was* mixed in Chicago...(I'd given anything to have had a paper route in *that* neighbourhood...instead of my old Maywood, Illinois home on *those* days!biggrin) , but...according to the "Earthtones: The Essential Rare Earth" essay by Al Quaguleri, Motown flew the group to Hollywood...and it (apparently) was at the Mowest studios where "Ecology" (The bulk of it, anyway) was created...

According to what I've read and have been told, Ecology was recorded at Studio A (Hitsville). The acoustics of both "Get Ready" and "Ecology" sure do have that sound.

 As for One World...I can't recall. I think it was recorded at Studio B (formerly Golden World). Ray, Gil, Pete & Ralph would know.

According to Ray, "One World" was indeed made at Studio B.

Gotta have research done on where "Ecology" **was** made....(The Post-"Generation" material, that is..)

I have just downloaded the Generation Soundtrack and I am amazed!!  I have been looking for this, (like all of us) since I first bought Get Ready way back when as a teenager.  Rare Earth at their best!! Get it here along with other albums.  The songs are not all correct on the RAREARTH album but the rest are great, sound is excellent!!  www.musicbazaar.com
