Spanish copy of MA
Permalink

I was looking at a Spanish pressing of MA which I picked up years ago at a record collectors fair in London, I bought it because it was cheap and it had a different cover to the dreadful rocking horse picture. I have never played the thing as I always play the CD, so I have never noticed that missing from the record is "Come With Me", not just on the record but there is no mention of it on the track listing on either the label or sleeve.
Could it have been left off because that Spain is a very religious country and Motown Spain thought it might affend?
Whatever the reason  its VERY strange I think you will agree.

Wow. Whatever you do, hold on to that. That is a RARE find. I envy you,  not having the track "Come with me". I absolutely HATE that tune, and wish it would never have ben included on the album.  I thought it was insulting.  Just like I do not like hearing dirty jokes, profanity or listening to people describe their sexual fantasties, I don't want to hear two people( or more) simulating having sex, and, who knows... maybe that was someone really having sex, for all we know, on a record album, ofr the love of Pete! ( No pun intended) SHEESH!

IIRC, I recall Pete or Ray saying that was Norman's secratary/assistant making those noises. And no doubt that was Norman's idea, may he rest in peace. Mind you, it's not convincing how she does it. It's not classy either. Not even close to the famous scene w/Meg Ryan from "When Harry Met Sally". Now when Donna Summer does that bit in "Love To Love You Baby", we know what she's hinting at but it's done with class.

I love the musicianship on the track though. I could listen to the band groove like that all day. The song would've been just fine without those noises. And the title tying in with the noises...ok, yeah we get the innuendo! The song needs a remix from the multitrack tapes without those noises.

I love the music to "Come with me", although it is a bit on the suggestive side on its own.  I tried using the program " Sound Effects" on my computer that enables one to remove the vocal track on recordings( in the same way as Kareoke machines do) but, unfortunately, you can still hear the sounds of the moaning woman.

We were all in the control room. Normans assistant was out in one of the overdub booths. No one could see her. I'm sure she was just acting out the noises. ACTING !  get it.....  ACTING!

Yes, Peter, I'm well aware of the fact that she was acting.

Sorry Steve:  I read my post and I think I sounded a bit harsh. I guess I get those feelings when I reflect on the MA album. Especially that song. It's one of those things in life that I wish I could take back...  Well forgiveness is so important isn't it? I don't think any of us in the band knew that the girls moaning was going to be the last over-dub on the song. I think we all thought it was going to be some sort of instrumental or something we were going to write lyrics to. Well.......... so much for that.....  I did love Ray's acoustic playing along with everyone else's playing...... Peter

It's not that bad Peter. It just gets in the way off some good playing. There's a lot of good music going off in the background. I'm sure Norman thought it was a good idea at the time.

I always meant to ask, what's the story with Hum Along and Dance? Was it really a case of no time for Norman or Barrett to write lyrics? Was it a Rare Earth original or did the Jackon 5 do it first?

Hi Peter,

From what I've read in your book I can understand how you might feel that way about the Ma sessions. Then again, what do I know? I wasn't there. smile

I have to give kudos to some really tasty percussion in there too. Not sure what you played and what Eddie played but it's still good. smile

And I have to mention Mike Urso's somewhat buried vocal "sweeter than wine".

 Peter,

Thank you, but, you have nothing to be sorry about. That is very kind of you. I didn't take it that way. I read in past posts from you, plus in your book, that you were not happy with things dealing with the Ma album.  I recall one post here from you where you said something like the moaning girl( Am I using the correct term?) included in the recording embarrassed you-- or words to that effect. I'd have to look for the actual post.  I don't mean to make such a big deal out of, but I am guilty of doing as much, and for that I apologize.

Thanks ever so much,
 Steve
