Does anyone here know what the words spoken at the beginning of this tune are, translated in English?
Back when the album came out, I was playing it at work, when a co worker who was from the Phillipines, said "he's saying bad words", but he wouldnt tell me what was being said. Just curious to find out what, exactly, is being said.
This question arose some time ago and I remember someone else saying a foreigner had pointed out that it was bad (or rude) words. I think Ray (or maybe Peter) confirmed it was Eddie and I think they were just random words?
I wish I could point you in the right direction to the original thread. It was about a year ago. If I can find it I'll let you know
It took me well over an hour but I found the previous reference to Smiling Faces Sometimes.
If you go back to the thread titled Ray Monette, you'll find that Steve Barber posted this question on Feb 2nd 2007. Ray replied saying that Eddie used a mix of real Spanish words and babble, adding that he was just having fun with it.
Hope this helps. Andy has probably given a more definitive answer.
In the same thread Ray mentions that Norman Whitfield's secretary (Ayeisha?) overdubbed the moans on Come With Me from that same album.
Come With Me...that's one of my fave instrumental R.E. segments. Nice work from everyone on that track. It sounds as if Norman was trying too hard with the carnal sounds. Take those moans out and you have a great musical groove. If could remix that track, I'd leave those moans out of the mix. I'm not one for being revisionistic. The song is what it is
I agree with Mike and Peter regarding the "vocals" on the "Come With Me" track. I had heard a tale about exactly how those moans came to be - I think it made for an interesting story, a fictional story.
with all due respect... from what I have read, the band didn't haven't any say with regard to the Ma album.
Everyone--and I do mean EVERYONE--should buy a copy of Peter's book. It is an absolute must have, and it is one of those books that grabs you with the first sentence. I couldn't stop, once I started, and read the book in roughly 4 and a half hours. It is *THAT* exciting. Everything anyone might want to know about the band a whole, is in his book.
Lets take a reality check, yes the moaning should have been left out of it as it does ruin some great guitar work but as for "shaME".....do me a favour hahaha. The tower of london dungeons awaits the band, so now we know why they never came to the England, LOL!
Mary Whitehouse LOL....well done to whoever posted that message.
For those who don't know, Mary Whitehouse was an elderly lady who used to censor our TV programmes in the UK. She inspired the Deep Purple song Mary Long on their "Who Do We Think We Are?" album.
I think I'm right in saying she passed away a few years ago.
As for Come With Me, I can live with it. It's just a shame that it distracts the listener from Ray's acoustic guitar work.

It also distracts from Mark's funky organ. Ray does some nice wah wah work and some acoustic picking that sounds a lot like a mandolin.
Mary Long..."Mary Long is a hypocrite..." Great tune!
Correct Dave, Mrs. Whithouse passed away several years ago. Pink Floyd name check her on the track Pigs from their Animals album.. I seem ti remeber her getting very hot under the collar about Chuck Berry's My Ding-a-ling lol............ She certainly was a strange lady.
Mary Whitehouse - in addition to being not-so-subtly referneced in Pink Floyd's "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" - was most famed for getting producer Philip Hinchcliffe fired from "Doctor Who". Even though the "Who" ratings, thanks to Hinchcliffe, were *through the roof*..The BBC were still called to the carpet over the graphically violent content of several stories ("The Brain Of Morbius" & "The Deadly Assassin" were two prime examples). The BBC transferred Hinchcliffe to their Drama Department where he made the even more violent series "Target".
Me to the rescue..............at 1 point,it seems like EDDIE says the word....puta......which means whore. As far as the moaning..............man,the sex revolution was in full bloom,it even got a lot of airplay on armed forces radio, some good guitar on that thing, know of not 1 person whom complained......that includes my grandmother.

Yes you are right, he says: "La puta que está buena calados". That means: "She's freaking hot my friends". That's the most accurate translation that I find posible, because when we (I'm from Argentina) say "la puta bla bla bla" that means that the next words are describing something awesome! But, if you take word by word, puta is whore as you said. Before that, he mainly says nothing! At one point he says "Perico=Parrot", and then "Alegría calados=be happy my friends" Then comes the "La puta" part and then almost nothing and the word "Calzón=underpants and also can be used as panties" Hope this info was good for you. I know, a few years later! Have a nice day! Greetings from Argentina Rare Earth fans!
THIS IS IN REGARD TO "COME WITH ME". I WAS REMEMBERING BACK WHEN THAT INFAMOUS OVERDUB WAS DONE. WE ALL BLAMED NORMAN FOR IT. AFTER ALL IT WAS HIS IDEA..AND HIS SECRETARY. TRUTH IS..WE WERE ALL THERE WHEN IT WAS DONE..IF I REMEMBER RIGHT. NO ONE COMPLAINED OR SAID ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT IT. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN TOUGH TO GET NORMAN TO CHANGE HIS MIND..BUT IF WE WOULD'VE STOOD UP AS A GROUP AND SAID WE DON'T WANT THAT ON OUR RECORD..I GOTTA BELIEVE NORMAN WOULD'VE BACKED OFF ON IT. SO.....WE ARE ALL TO BLAME AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED.
It is what it is Ray. I can live with it because I listen through the moans and focus on your brilliant guitar backdrop. If I have one issue with the Ma album I just wish that the title track hadn't been stretched to cover a whole album side, which could have allowed for two or three more songs. The lyrics to Hum Along and Dance seem to sum that album up for me; a rush job, presumably to provide a quick follow up to Willie Remembers. In my opinion there was no need. To this day WR remains a great piece of work. As far as Ma is concerned, Smiling Faces and Big John are the only two songs that stand out for me.
How about when you were touring over that time period? Did you have total say over what you put in your setlist? Did Motown or Ron Strasner ever insist that you include Big John or Smiling Faces ahead of anything off Willie Remembers? A lot of your set obviously had to include GR, Losing You, Celebrate, HBB and Born to Wander, because the fans would expect that. Presumably that left little room to include other newer material? I expect that's still the case even now?
OUR LIVE SHOW WAS ALWAYS IN OUR CONTROL. BUT LIKE YOU SAID DAVE, THERE WASN'T MUCH ROOM WITH GET READY AND LOSING YOU FOR MANY NEW SONGS. OVER THE YEARS,I DOUBT WE EVER ADDED MORE THAN 3 SHORT SONGS TO OUR SET LIST. THEN WE WOULD SEE HOW THE CROWDS REACTED AND KEEP OR DROP THE NEW ONES.
THAT'S STILL THE CASE TODAY. THE SONGS FROM THE MOST RECENT ALBUM HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED EXCEPT FOR THE LOVE YOU SAVE. WE PUT THAT IN EVERY NOW AND THEN. THE FANS COME TO HEAR THE CLASSICS...THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN THE PRIORITY,AND STILL IS TODAY.
At the infamous Randall s Island concert I do remember HBB,HUM,JOHN,and watching Pete cut out.Everyone loved RE but no security.MA is a real watershed event.Album did well on the pop charts, great on the soul charts,MA the song was 2 long, but other great songs.leave Norman alone,he was a master on long songs and so was RE,seemed like a great idea,Norman was just a arrogant new yorker like me.
